  • Darkplaces crashes E4M2

    Hi,

Im using the Darkplaces engine to play through Quake 1 singleplayer.
Love it, but I've come across a problem which I'm hoping one of you guys could give me a hand with..
I finish E4M1 and it gets to the level stats screen with no problem, but on loading E4M2 it crashes out every time with 'darkplaces.exe has stopped working'
I've tried reloading with no mods but I get the same problem, tried starting a new game and going straight to E4 and playing through but crashes at the same point every time.
I'm running it on Win 7 64 bit.
As far as error messages go, it doesn't really give alot away other than windows will let me know when a solution becomes available (lovely)....
    Any ideas?

    Cheers...

    Hi,

I have the same problem running on XP.
It seems that DP has a problem with E4M2.

By the way, you dont need to play through the first Map to test it:
Simply type "map e4m2" in the console (and DP loads the map, which will bring you the error in this case)

Hope, that LH will solve it some day.

    Best Regards,
    Seven

First, you should email LordHavoc to let him know you have the issue:

      LordHavoc's DarkPlaces Quake Modification

Then, load up a previous DarkPlaces build that doesn't have the problem and use that one to play.

      LordHavoc's DarkPlaces Quake Modification

You might try the 8/8/2008 build, for example. Or the 7/7/2007 build. Or some other version.

        Thanks for the replies guys...

I'll lick off an email to the good Lord and let him know...

Baker: Never even thought of trying that - I'll give it a shot tonight and see what happens - Thanks bruv...

I know why this happens. Turn off RT world and the crash should no longer happen. There are some bugs I pointed out to LordHavoc with the light geometry (??) I believe. Certain shadows appear in odd places where they shouldn't be appearing, and only when standing in a specific spot are they noticable. These apparently do not happen in Linux, only on Windows machines.

I had a bunch of screenshots showing these bugs, but I know longer have them as I recently upgraded my computer and re-formatted.

Somehow these bugs cause only E4M2 to outright crash... I let Lordhavoc know awhile ago about this, it seems I was the only one to notice it. He's probably busy with Nexuiz right now is my guess. I'm sure its on his to-do to fix.

By the way, the best way to get in touch with him is on IRC. irc.anynet.org #darkplaces.

I haven't seen him around lately though, usually he is always on. Probably swamped with work is my guess.

I've had E4M2 crash Darkplaces in Mac OS X 10.6.4. So it's not just a windows bug.

              @ ROOK

browsing your link feels like disturbing Lord Havocs privacy.
I even found a desktop pic (maybe his)...

Maybe this is the place where he does his magic.

              @ bta.monster

thank you for your hint with the RT world setting.

Ya Seven I deleted my post. It looks like its on his dad's website computer and could bring unwanted traffic, thus stealing his bandwidth

Just FYI, I fixed this a couple weeks ago, the darkplaces autobuild should take care of it.

Also, this is a more up to date photo of my desk area:

LordHavoc's private DarkPlaces build can see in all 6 directions at once

As a result, you can never sneak up on him.

Nah, the lighting in Jurassic Park is nowhere near Havoc standards.
