if i get the pak. files from the quake cd, can i get the files on a different computer??

Of course you can. Just copy the game data (pak0.pak) or simply your entire Quake directory.

(Or is your question about legal things? I think no sane person would consider buying 2 copies of each game because they have a laptop and a desktop PC...)
