  • How to install and run Quake in Win7

This must be a really newbie question, but i just took my old Quake CD from the "naftaline" and thought whether i could try playing it.
There may be solutions to these problems somewhere in this site, but i'm also new to the site.

My simple question is, how to install and run Quake under Win7?
The first problem seems to be installing, because it's a 16 bit software,
    it doesn't even start.

Works fine for me. Does it install? Or is that the part that doesn't start..

      Explore the CDROM

To explore, just open "My computer"
Then right click the Quake Icon'd CDROM drive,
      Select "Explore"

      Browse around there for these:

      There is an Install.bat. and a setup.exe.

      Try both, one will work.

Should be in the main of the cdrom but, shrugs.

Nothing is always the same, sometimes there are different makes out there.

PS if you do get it installed, remove OPENGL32.DLL from your Quake Directory, wherever you installed it. So it uses your graphic card glide drivers and not the old Voodoo drivers.

      An snag yourself http://quakeone.com/proquake/proquake_451.zip

      Proquake the updated client.

Then make a shortcut of that client with ur specs, or i think that client will automatically choose the max resolution for u now, not 100% sure on that i'm still use to the shortcut then -width 1680

      to get my 1680x1050 resolution.

Use DOSBOX to run the setup from the cd, then remove opengl32.dll, install ProQuake for opengl, or DirectQ for directx, and you should be good to go.

I basically sat down with DOSBOX, a copy of Shareware Quake (my DOS Quake CD has gone missing ) and ploughed through it.

Ideally someone would make a proper native 32-bit program to just extract the PAK files from the archives, set up the game directories correctly and perhaps even include a minimally patched WinQuake and/or GLQuake.exe for use.

Thanks for all the replies. I was able to install Quake from the old CD using DosBox. I even managed to update it to version 1.06.

I downloaded ProQuake but there were no instructions at all, how to use it.
I copied the OpenGL version under my Quake folder but when i run it, i just get a message saying that "libcurl.dll is missing from your computer".

Btw, should i use the original Quake 1.06 with ProQuake or download the unofficial GL Quake?

Ok, i figured it out myself already. I just forgot to copy the dll files in the Quake directory.

Now Quake works fine in 1920x1200 mode. I feel just like in 1996 but just with better looking graphics. I still remember how cool this game was then. It's funny that the nail gun feels as cool now as it was then.

Still about the GLQuake, is there any reason to use it?

                Anyhow, thanks for your help.

You might as well delete the glQuake.exe file. Also delete q95.bat.

erm, this forum is about Quake 1 , not Quake 4? There's probably better places to ask.

Anyways I have an issue aswell in win7 x64, I can't seem to browse any discs which are mixed mode (data+audio), windows see's them as audio only discs. I'm kind of stumped on how to access them as I'd like to play some of my other games and mods, without having to use my old XP machine to get the files I need off the discs.

Does anyone know a solution for this? I have autorun disabled.

Have you tried right clicking the drive and choosing explore?

Explore does not work, my quake CD looks like this if you choose explore:

So the quake installer files are stored in the .1 .2 and .DAT files and Deice is the extractor. Runs not on Windows 7, needs pure DOS (or Dosbox) to extract. The audio tracks could be easily extracted with EAC (for example) without any problems under Windows.

I can't even get that, it shows up as an audio CD in explorer, and if I try to open it windows media player launches (ARGH!).
