This is AMD/ATI'S fault, their OpenGL drivers are rather bad. You can fix this by creating a shortcut to the .exe and adding "-bpp 32" to the commandline ("target"). I would recommmend using DirectQ instead though, wait until 1.8.7 is out and then go for it: mhquake
Either pop the CD out of your drive or run with -nocdaudio. Quake can't read it.
You're also using a graphics driver that doesn't support OpenGL, most probably the one that was installed by your PC's manufacturer. You'll definitely need to update that too.
