  • Old School Bot

hey guys. I haven't been able to post that much after signing up, but I had a question about something that I've been trying to run for a while. I guess it can't be run on any versions other than 1.01 - 1.06 but I've been trying. I'm not sure if any of you guys remember the Mystery Bot, but it was a client side bot (but you couldn't play as or control it like Terminator, Quakebot etc.) and was designed for CTF. I remember playing it back in the day and it was actually pretty fun. If anybody would like to take a crack at it I actually found the old website and saved it, including the bot files. You can find it at Mystery Bot Home Page

If anybody could get this working that would be awesome. Been wanting to visit a blast from the past (because I hate playing the Reaper).

Its unlikely anyone is gonna work on a client side bot,it invokes too much potential drama.

Well it's not the source, so it's unlikely that someone will be able to rewrite any code to make it a potential threat to straight players. Yes, it's a client side bot but it cannot be used on any public servers other than your own local LAN. It's actually really fun to play against.

To be honest, I dont thing it will work with anything other than the original "software" Quake. This is actually a "exe" file and not just a add-on type, like ctfbot or alot of the other mods. With that being the case I went ahead and tried it, but I didnt have any good results. (CTFbot works well with Joequake though)Darkplaces tried to open and it started a 3 wave level but the console was screwed up and nothing worked. Maybe GLquake will work, but I have to check it out on my other computer.

Let us know if you figure anything out. It sounds like fun actually
If you see 427 playing Quake thats me.

I'll let you know if I can get it working. I will probably dedicate most of this day to working on it so I'll give you an update here sometime later.

And yeah the Mystery Bot was really fun to play. The custom maps were small but it was fun watching the demos it recorded from the bots POV.

I like running dedicated servers with old mods (runes, ctf, etc) and loading the server up with bots. The only bots that I found you can use though are the RuneBot and Frikbot. I can't remember the mod name but it had runes and the rockets were severed player heads with a blood trail instead of smoke. That was back in '97 and I haven't seen it since. It was fun though. This Mystery Bot uses the old ctf mod with runes too. That's why it was so fun on the Mystery Bot custom maps.

the only ctf server i found that is anything like the old skool and non 3wave is in the experimental server list, but its still not old skool, where as u just join server and server puts u on a team red or blue normally the team with the fewest players.. like on quake.hating.com:26000 back in the late 90's

to me it was more of a challenge that way for either level of game play.

the servers i remember the most that used the rune mods were quake.infinet.com and quake.lithium.com in '97. I used to play in those servers for hours and get stomped (since I was on 56k and had a ping of 300. that's how much fun it was) but I can't seem to find any of the old mods. There was also another bot that was similar called "LlamaBot" that was alot like Mystery Bot and older but those files are long gone since I don't have my old PC anymore. They were also Client Side. They were alot like Frogbot but had awesome features.
