  • Problem playing Xwar weapons mod!

Hey guys, I'm brand new to this forum and need some of the expert help here. I'm trying to play an old weapons mod called "Xwar" and get only a screen full of crazy colors with the sound working fine. I was having this issue with many of the engines I have installed such as Tomaz or Telejano. From another post here in the forum, I added the -bpp 32 to my shortcut command line and it fixed those other issues. It will not work with the Xwar though.
    I have the following:
    XP Pro SP3
Radeon x1650 with the last certified drivers available
    1gb of ram
    Does anyone have any suggestions??
    Thanks in advance.

If you've got some old mod, you need to provide a link to the download to get quality help. It helps others help you.

The newest release of either of those engines was 2004. That's gonna be 7 years ago soon.

You should use FitzQuake, DirectQ or DarkPlaces or any other modern engine. TomazQuake and Telejano were great back in 2004, but have been dead and unmaintained engines for more than half a decade. Unless the readme says the mod *requires* a specific engine.

That being said, add -window -no8bit to your command line and I bet it might run.

I posted no link because I can't find an active one anymore. It was one I had downloaded long ago and when I put my quake back on my PC it wouldn't work.

I tried your suggestion and the opening movie came up fine and looked good but then I got this Quake error: I was still using Tomaz. I'll try it with Darkplaces.

I tried it with the latest Proquake and still received the last error I posted above. Any more suggestions?

I had this error with another engine, I fixed it by pushing the windows key and then when it brought be back to windows - I just clicked back into the game and colors were fine after. Just something to try? Know it isn't a fix.

That didn't work either. I might just have to give up on playing that old mod. Just annoying due to the fact I've achieved workarounds on all my other old mods like fqreal with commandline and engine changes, but this one is really stubborn! LOL Strange how I can see the changed weapons and explosions in the opening movies with some of the things suggested here, but when I try to enter and start a new game it gives me the error.
Thanks for trying to help guys. If anyone else has an idea throw it to me please and I'll try it.
                  Regards

Must require a custom engine, your message indicates that an unknown temp entity was spawned. A temp entity is a particle effect.

If you want that mod to run, you might post this question at Inside3d Forums :: Index where someone with ancient mod experience would either know what engine it needs or #2 how to get DarkPlaces to run the mod.

                        Update

Fixed the problem in a way from the following advice from the Inside 3d forum Baker suggested. This reply was from leileilol.

"The mod had its own engine (a modified TomazQuake with exclusive built-ins for the mod) and so you'd have to start it as

xwar.exe -game xwar -bpp 32 -window

GLQuake-based engines on modern hardware (Modern being "after 2002") tend to freak out a lot as GLQuake has some reaaaaaaaaaally low defaults."

This fixed the first error I had but now it tells me that the textures are too big.
I've cured that with other mods by making a copy of my Quake folder as it is now and moving it to a different location temporarily, uninstalling and reinstalling Quake and then having a folder with the original textures. When I want the high textures I just swap the folders. If anyone has a trick here ?
Baker and others here, thanks again!
