Complete newbie here - How do I play custom maps?

I'm new to this forum, and to Quake 1 mapping. I've made a few very basic test levels to get the hang of mapping, but how do I run them using Quake? The only way I know to run my maps are from within WorldCraft.

Once compiled and in your id1/maps folder:
bring down the console and type:
map *namehere*
without the .bsp

Thanks, but how do I run it in multiplayer? I'd like to be able to run it in a listen server.

Start a server like usual and when ingame:
changelevel *mapname*
