  • Seeking assistance in recording a video of quake.

    Hi guys,

    I was wondering if anybody here might be able to help me in something difficult.

    I would like to make a video of a level in quake 1 but there are a few things that I would like to do first. I would like to:

    1. remove all enemies from the level, whether it be through console commands or some sort of cheat.

    2. slow down the players movement speed.

    3. somehow hide my weapon or make it invisible


    The map is e1m3 on GL Quake (platform is XP).

    Would I be better off recording it as a demo and then converting it or should I use a screen capture program?

    I have camstudio but I find it a total pain, it took so long to setup camstudio and I dont particularly want to play quake in windowed mode for this little operation anyway.

    Well, that's about all I can think of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    #3 ... r_drawviewmodel 0 hides weapon.

    #1 can be achieved by doing "deathmatch 1" in the console before loading a single player map.

    #2 Some engines support host_timescale where 1 = 100% and 50% = 50% (FitzQuake, probably ProQuake, maybe Engine X, DarPlaces has this but cvar command name may not be the same.). Some engines support cl_demospeed for demo playback where you can make it slower (JoeQuake, Qrack, ProQuake, Engine X). All engines support host_framerate but you'd need to read up at The Console to see how the values work.

    Some engines like JoeQuake/Qrack/ProQuake/Engine X support the capturedemo command and variants. See docs at http://joequake.runecentral.com/features.html. DarkPlaces supports something like cl_togglecapture 1 which starts recording.

      As for the recording, I definitely want to do it in one of the engines where the graphics haven't been changed.

          ahhh shit, I've hit a couple of snags already....


          1. In deathmatch mode you can't use 'noclip' (and for the video I need to be able to switch it on.

          How can I switch on cheats in deathmatch mode?

          2. Is there a way to remove all items from the level without using a level editor?

            im having a little trouble understanding.

            but what i would like to do is record a video of walking through the level with no items until i get to the end then look up at the sky, put noclip on then fly up to the sky.

            It's for a music video.

              You aren't allowed to cheat in DM so "noclip" isn't an option and there is no way to remove the items in single player or deathmatch so ...

              You'll need to open e1m3 in a text editor, copy the entire entities section and remove the monsters and the items manually and save as e1m3.ent text file and recompile the map using qbsp with the parameter "-onlyents".

              For help recompiling a map, in detail you are better off pursuing this line of thought by asking for help in the process at the Func_Msgboard mapping help thread at Func_Msgboard: Mapping Help to get any level of hands-on help.

                You don't need noclip nor fly mode, both are enabled by default while your observing a game going on.....

                Might I recommend trying to do your work on rage.quakeone.com:26000 , it offers no monsters & no pick ups like armour,health,weapons, ETC.

                      Also , flying is enabled through holding Attack + Jump ??? Pretty sure thats right.

                        My thoughts exactly. Rook also made it so that for admin purposes, you could actually use fly and noclip in the mod. So if he downloads the mod and just sets up his own stuff he can do it all with 0 ping no lag, etc.

                        The link for the CAx mod is right here: CAx (coded by Rook and Bam)

                        Phonix do you know how to setup your own server to use the mod at home?

                        I am not familiar with the admin menu of CAx anymore as I haven't played in ages. Rook may need to chime in on this one as far as the commands for the things I'm describing.

                          Nah, i've got no idea. i havent kept up with any of the multiplayer stuff. Sounds like it might be the best solution though.

                          does it work with plain old GL-Quake? Also, please keep in mind I would like to remove weapons

                            Phonix,

                            I am not sure what program you are using to make the video but from what it sounds like you are doing, the easiest solution is to:

                            1) Single Player DM Mode like Baker said. Record the walk through all the way to the end and stop right before you look up and go into the sky.

                            2) switch back to regular single play mode. Clear out the map, go stand in the exact same spot, looking in the same direction. turn on no clip, start recording, do the fly out the sky thing. Stop recording.

                            Whatever program you are using, edit and add 2nd video to first one, you might have to do some frame editing to match it perfectly.



                            Also if it hasnt been said before, you can use slowmotion/fast forward when watching quake movies using QRACK or joeQuake. So you can make your video, then watch it in quake, and use a capturing software, like FRAPS to record the playback of the .DEM. So you can do your slowdowns and speedups after originally making the 1st video.

                              open GLProQuake , drop console using ~ tilde button,
                              type in these commands in the console.....

                              Do what u gotta do! Eventually LOOKUP at sky, and then, open console
                              stop(enter)

                              Thats the easiest way to do what your wanting without the hassle of video-splicing, or map editing. Just know this, people will see you connected and flock to the server within you being there 5-20 minutes.

                              You DON'T need admin to fly in OBSERVER MODE,holding down attack+jump at the same time should enable flying! clipping through walls and ceilings (out of map) is automatically "there" and usable,just the same.
                              Your request is do able many ways, but I'm one for taking the quickest route to the end.
