  • Quake Timedemo Problem

I have an original retail copy of Q1 v1.01 installed on a 98 box and would like to measure it's fps. I know I drop to console and type 'timedemo demo2' for a standard measure, but I seem to remember on my old PCs this would then burn through demo2 as fast as possible, and then tell me the average fps afterwards. Now, it's playing demo2 as it should, but at normal speed and no fps summary at the end. Anyone seen this? Same results from demo1 and 3.
    Ta in advance

Can't you check FPS with timerefresh in console?

First things first, get a new client/engine !!

ProQuake is Win98 compatible!, Extract the ZIP into your root Quake folder (eg C:\Quake\ or C:\Games\Quake\)

Use the hightest monitor REFRESH rate possible!
      Verify VSYNC is turned off!
      set pq_maxfps 9999 in console.

this should get you going on timedemo's

I can, but that just gives me a rather inaccurate measurement that changes depending on the location in the level, what's happening on screen, the console being open at the time, phases of the moon etc. The overall average gives a clearer picture

One thing; will this run on a 98se box with 2x VooDoo2s in SLI mode, or have I lost the plot on what ProQuake can do? If ProQuake looks better/is quicker than glQuake (which I'm sure it is) on this machine, then that's what I'll be using eventually. But first I was hoping to see out of interest more than anything what modern-ish hardware would make of a Win98/original Quake setup.
Basically, I've built a retro box to play my old 3dfx/Glide games again and I've fed it two VooDoo2 to do the job properly, just so you know where I'm coming from.

            It'll work fine.

Well firstly, thanks for the tip and pointing me at ProQuake. I tried it at home and it certainly left me speechless for a few seconds, running at 1980x1020 on a 42" plasma screen I have already downloaded Rygels texture packs and plan on seeing how they go, as well as a dynamic lighting and transparent water mod I've seen abouts, so ta for that and goodbye to next weekend!
One thing I did find, for other to reference; my retail original v1.01 exe apparently just does not support timedemo. It plain would not work no matter what I tried, but when I found an old disk with the v1.09 exe on it and dropped it in, works like a charm. 200fps without breaking a sweat and 50ish in glQuake via one of the VooDoo 2s. I'll SLI them later today and see what that does

To use all that fancy Rygel's stuff and such, you'd need to use DarkPlaces. ProQuake is just an improved GLQuake, it doesn't load fancy new age content ... just delivers a 1997 GLQuake experience that works with modern hardware without all the hassles.

I have DarkPlaces running at home too. Ta; when I play around with things this weekend I'll know which one I should be playing around with
As for the VooDoo SLI plan, of all the things I can't seem to find it's a suitable floppy cable to mod into an SLI cable. Never thought I'd ever run out of them...
