Recently, twice, windows on my other system has said after a month of use, it randomly says "product key invalid". Never got OS from Wal-Mart when system purchased as they forgot to transfer ownership? Some bs. Anyhow, I can't get any files off in safe mode, and I don't know how to recover files (I need to get into the system!)

I have some very important demos from a CTF Tournament and I can't get to them.

This is the easiest way I know.
Go to this page and download the cd
Download | Ubuntu
Burn it and boot your pc from it.
You will need something to write the copy to usb stick etc.
you may have to change the boot order to boot from cdrom in bios.

when it boots pick the try it option no changes.

at the desktop look top left toolbar look for the drive in places
double clik drive it should open and you can copy anything from it.

Installing Ubuntu as a second operating system has allowed me to copy files off "hopelessly foobared" computers several times. Never mine, of course. But on more occasions than I have cared to deal with, some friend or bud asks for help and although it isn't my favorite thing to do with my time, I do help.

Using Ubuntu you can get file access to the entire Windows operating system and copy off the files, even if Windows is hopelessly foobared.

Modern Ubuntu ... like the very recent versions ... is incredibly easy to install as a 2nd operating system. Amazingly modern super user-friendly install. Even a couple of years ago, it was not this easy.

Ubuntu is bootable off CD too! Support for thumb drives should make it a synch to transfer the needed files, then start it clean install.

Windows7 Loader is how I roll.

Using another OS isn't necessary even if it is just using an Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD. Also what if his "Ubuntu Live CD" OS doesn't support his video card? He'd be stuck with a garbled screen and not a clue how to fix it. (CTRL+ALT+F1/login/purge video drivers/install new video drivers/sudo stop gfm/sudo start gdm etc etc etc...)

The hiren boot CD is a Windows XP interface and does the exact same thing as Ubuntu Live but is geared for this type of situation..

I've used Ubuntu live CD and Hiren's Boot Cd countless times on saving information or repairing an OS.

Its a bit excessive and things could go wrong very easily (Though it always works in theory.) using an Ubuntu Live CD for this.

I think you will find X is stable now falling back to vesa 800 x 600 60hz
will run on any display even most tv sets.

The elephant in the room is if does not pick the live option and chose to install would erase his hdd! Though I think it plainly tells you so beforehand.I do agree it packs some serious horsepower,but I think
Chad can handle it.I would advise one thing though,whenever you Hack in to a box do not write to it!
Just leech and leave.
