  • Help Running quake.exe on Windows 7

Ok, i am new to this forums so hello to all!

I finally found my quake 1 Disc, and i was directed by a friend to this forum for help. I am trying to run "QUAKE.EXE" but, my laptop keeps telling me the following.

"The version of the file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running"

Im assuming due to the games age it may not run.. but theres got to be a fix for this.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    cheers,
    Quake.exe

Your computer is too new to run QUAKE.EXE. You'll need a modern fixed-up client to get Quake working. There's a handful of links on the right side of the home page... Proquake is the most faithful to the original Quake.

Sure, you can mod Quake all the same with Proquake as you could with oldschool QUAKE.EXE.

I myself recommend Darkplaces if you are going to be using graphic enhancements. As your 2nd post was in my weapons pack thread, seems like you are wanting to go that route.
          http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplac...10509beta1.zip
This is the latest beta - released yesterday

Reason I recommend Darkplaces if you are going for the graphical modding route - it has the most support for various model types. Supports normal mapping, gloss maps, luma/glow textures and shaders. For example my SoA weapons pack uses optional shaders - in which are the animated fading in/out glow on the Laser Cannon (and soon to be prox mine).
Darkplaces however strays away from the original Quake and should NOT be used if you are wanting just vanilla Quake or just Quake with some model replacements - other engines are better choices for that route. However if you want to use content that myself, Seven and the Reforged team have done - Darkplaces basically becomes a requirement.

Yes i was looking at those. At the moment the only thing that seems to run is GLQUAKE.EXE, I'm not to sure if thats used anymore but i'm downloading dark places right now. Also, how to install it? or is there an executable?

            Thanks,

Just extract the contents to the same folder as quake.exe
so extract it so darkplaces.exe and quake.exe are in the same folder.

See attached image. Yours should be similar to mine (keep in mind I have various other mods installed)

This is the part where everyone recommends their favourite engine, isn't it?

Well mine is in the link in my signature, but instead of recommending it I'm going to describe what a few engines do and let you make your own choice.

First up, and in order to understand some of what I'm going to be saying, you should read this: Software vs GLQuake (so should everyone else). This only touches the surface; there's also wobbly skies and breaky-up water, as well as a few other things. Now, maybe none of that matters to you, but maybe it does and if so it will influence your choice.

Second up it's decision time: Single Player, Multiplayer or both? It's not unreasonable to pick two engines and use each one depending on the game type you're playing.

Thirdly it's another decision: do you want something that looks reasonably similar to old school Quake, or do you want a modernised appearance with lots of graphical goodness?

                    On to the engines.

DarkPlaces had better be gotten over with first. It's an "everything including the kitchen sink (with extra kitchen sink)" engine, highly configurable, and with options scaling all the way from basic and grotty to shiny and sparkly high res high quality. You could if you were so inclined spend more time tweaking it's configs than actually playing the game. Be warned - as said above - that it also includes several gameplay changing modifications, some of which are enabled by default.

On the Multi Player scene the engine of choice is ProQuake. It looks more or less almost exactly like GLQuake did (and with mostly the same graphical issues) but has extensive tinkering under to bonnet to greatly enhance the MP game.

Also here is Qrack which takes the solid MP base of ProQuake and adds a lot of more modern graphical enhancements.

Moving over to Single Player and there are a few options. First one I'm going to mention is FitzQuake. This is pretty much the engine of choice among the mapping community, so if you want to download and play SP maps you should put it on the list for serious consideration. The primary feature of Fitz is that it goes a long way towards fixing a lot of GLQuake's graphical bugs. Don't come here looking for eye-candy though.

Next one is Bengt Jardrup's Enhanced GLQuake. This is essentially GLQuake (graphical bugs worn with pride) with shock-absorbers, an airbag, extra safety features, and so on. It's mainly intended as a mapping tool in fact, for loading broken maps, but you can use it for general play if you want.

JoeQuake is extremely popular among the speedrunning crew, and is pretty much the gold reference standard for them. I'm not too familiar with it but think it's worth a try.

Last one I'm going to mention is my own - DirectQ. It offers a Direct3D 9 renderer as an alternative for people who have trouble with OpenGL, and is probably the fastest engine you can get if raw performance is your thing. If you want to play Quake on a laptop with Intel graphics it might be the only one that works well, or works at all. Also uses modern rendering techniques to completely fix the old GLQuake graphical bugs, but no eye candy here either. Also has some MP features ported from ProQuake.

There are a few other older ones from years ago that are no longer being actively developed or widely used, so I'll pass over them. There are also various QuakeWorld engines for more hardcore Multiplayer games, but that's not my area of interest so I can't really say anything.

                      Hello MH,

first of all, thank you for your very nice comparism.
Such posts should be a sticky in the "Client" subforum, so that everyone gets a detailed and quick overview.

                      I agree 100% !
That is my curse and my passion at the same time.
Isnt developing something much more exciting than simply "using" it ?
You, as a great engine dev should agree on it I guess.
I rarely play Quake LOL , but love to experiment and make new things.

                      Kind regards,
                      Seven

How do you even get Quake.exe installed on Windows 7 64-bit? As I understand, I need to install Quake and get Quake.exe on my computer before I can run one of the clients (e.g. qrack, etc). Is that correct? If so, how do I do that on Win7 64-bit? When I try to run the install from my Quake 1 disk it says:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher"

Just simply copy and paste the files to your HDD
If you look on the disc, you'd come across the files - Quake.exe with the id1 folder and all.

Ah - I don't see those files, probably because I have the "Episode 1 Shareware" disk.

OK, just to prevent the confusion.

There are two main versions of the Quake installer on Windows: the original DOS Quake installer and the newer Windows-based installer. The DOS Quake installer does not contain the game data files in any format that you can just copy and paste. Instead it contains compressed versions that can only be decompressed and installed by itself, and that will not work on newer versions of Windows.

Copy and paste the files does work if you've got a CD containing the Windows installer version. It does not work if you've got a DOS CD.

Some time ago I wrote this page containing instructions for how to install using the DOS installer on a newer version of Windows: mhquake: Installing Quake using DOS Box

Be warned that it's for the downloadable shareware version, not the CD version and not the full retail CD. In other words you may have to adjust things a little to suit your own requirements, and you should not expect what I've written here to exactly match what you're seeing on the screen in front of you. It will give you a few nudges in the right direction though.

However, some time ago I found my original DOS Quake CD, so it may be timely to update this page for a CD install over the next week or so.

(Note to side admins: it might be useful if something like this was available as a big friendly link on the homepage, with instructions for all 3 DOS Quake versions: downloadable shareware, shareware CD and retail CD).
