is it possible with say darkplaces, if so can it be done with a simple pk3 or would it have to be hard coded?

For extra ambient sounds you'd need to add entities or modify already used ones both of which would require a modified progs.dat (source code - non-engine edit). So basically a mod.
The best option without needing that would be to replace the music tracks with ambient sounds. It won't provide the exact feel of what you want - like fire cracks would happen regardless of how close you are to them and even happen if the track has it - but you're on a map that doesn't have torches.

So all in all, you'd have to make a "mod" to get what you really want. Doesn't have to be a complete mod - but still modified code in the same concept as Seven's small mod release.

Google "Mindgrid audio pack". It has 44.1kHz replacements for Quake#s ambient sounds.

If that's what you wanted - some of you are phrasing your questions so badly that it isn't clear what exactly you want.

what i was originally asking is if there was an audio pack that made it so when you stood near liquids you heard the sound of running water, bubbling slime and burning lava. apparently darkplaces already has torch noises but only while playing the dpmod, anyone know of a way to use some of the dp additions in normal quake? (in dp engine) would be sweet to have shell casings and some of the other enhancements without having to play the game with the vast changes that dpmod has (like enemies with different weapons etc.)

btw having a hard time finding the Mindgrid audio pack seems the site is gone

Ooppee is correct about that point - you'd have to get the GPL map sources, load them in a map editor, and put custom sound emitters (from a mod like custents or extras) near lava etc., assign them some nice new .wav files, then recompile the maps and package it all as a mod.

It could probably be somewhat automated either via QC or by the engine though ("play X.wav near any torch").

Needs a mod (custom progs.dat) any way you slice it.

thanx dude i'm a big fan of your work and am currently using some of your stuff, but as far as the sound pack goes i prefer them to be truer to the originals so i will try it out since the read me says most of the weapon sounds sound the same but better. and i'm having an issue with your nails torch and footsteps pack, i was going to post in THAT thread but i'll go ahead and tell you here, i can't get nails to work. i've tried it alone with various other packs and the only one i can get nails to work with is the full pack of all the mods but all i want is the torches footsteps and nails sticking in walls. any advice? if i could somehow disable the other effects that i don't want from your big pack i would use that :-) btw is their a darkplaces .out file, like file that shows everything that darkplaces has tried to loads upon execution so i can show you what i have going on with my installation so you can tell me if i have a conflict?

o.k. just tried it an i love it so far great work and thanks, btw you guys know of a a hud that puts ammo and health in the corners of the screen?
