Keyboard wierdness!?!?!?

Playing this morning for a bit, my Uncle tried to type in a message and couldn't find the key that allows it. After a bit he realized other than the space bar controlling jump and the 1-9 controlling weapons, his keys were not functioning properly.

I asked him to type say in the console along with a message and hitting the key only produced numbers instead of letters. The esc key was also not functioning properly so he had to logoff to close the game.

I'm really not sure why my keys work while his don't....If it has something to do with the way I have a setting on the server or just plain an error on his copy of Dark Places/Quake????

I take it the keyboard works properly in other things? Maybe he had the function key on or something. What do you mean by not functioning properly?

All I remember him saying was the esc key would not bring up the menu and when brought up the console with the tilda key and began to type, all he could type were random numbers instead of letters.

We thought it might be a issue with the the version of Quake only, so he logged off to get out of the game and I started a Rogue server. He joined moments later and the problems began again.

As far as I know the keyboard has no problems while out of the game.

It might be easier if he registered and asked us himself—cut out the middleman. Maybe try getting him to use a different Quake engine? Proquake 4 should work nicely.

One thing to always try is simply delete/move/rename the config file are boot Quake up again and see if the issue still present. I haven't heard of this issue in Quake - but I did experience it in pre-steam Half-Life before. I reinstalled to fix it. I don't know of any console commands that can change the keyboard layout however.

Sounds like his keystrokes are showing up as their corresponding alt codes....

go to start bar, in the run spot type charmap hit enter,you'll see each keyboard character + nonstandard ones are all given some form of code. You said his shit is spitting out numbers only when he presses a key. Could be some correlation between the two, maybe...
