  • Missing .mdl files

I'm struggling a bit here. I have installed nQuake (so am using ezquake) and have managed to install all the relevant map packs etc...

The trouble I'm having on certain servers is that I get the error messages:
    progs\start.mdl not found
    progs\finish.mdl not found

and only on the SpineV2 map on one server:
file *43 could not be found

I have looked everywhere for these .mdl files and the *43 file but don't seem to get anywhere, I am missing a modification pack such as darkplaces or scourge of armageddon or are these other .mdl files from somewhere else.

If anyone could help that would be great.

Hey I saw you today on quakeworld server xs4all ffa and you mentioned this topic.

You should have two separate Quake folders (installations) on your drive: 1 for Q1/netquake and another separate folder for QW. For example:

    C:\games\quake

    and

    C:\games\quakeworld

If you have both Netquake and QW clients in the same c:/Quake folder, sooner or later things will be messed up. Trust me on this

Once you've set that up, delete the maps that give problems and connect to the server to download them again. Sometimes there are multiple versions of maps and you need the correct one. I know that the spinev2 on xs4all has Quad enabled and there's also a version which does not have Quad, but it's not on xs4all ffa at the moment (it was in the past). That probably means somebody edited the entities in that map which explains the two versions. If you already have the 'wrong' version on your drive, you'll get an error. It won't overwrite the map. Therefore you must delete it and re-download when you connect to the server.

    About the .mdl files:

I personally don't think they are necessary in the ID1/progs (netquake) or \qw\progs (QW) folder because the pak files already contains the necessary .mdl's. But here you already see a difference in the folder structure between NetQuake and QW. In QW, I personally have nothing in the ID1 folder besides just the pak0.pak and pak1.pak and my autoexec.cfg. All maps, skins, textures, etc go in the \QW\ sub-folders, NOT in the ID1 folder.

I don't know what client you use for QuakeWorld, but I recommend to use a dedicated QW client, not a client like DarkPlaces that can do both. So you should manually create a new QuakeWorld map, as I described earlier, install nQuake in there (nquake.com), then copy the pak1.pak into the ID1 folder and you should be ready to roll.

    Try that first.

I currently use Fodquake myself, which requires all settings to be in an autoexec.cfg which is put in the ID1 folder. You can get FodQuake here: Index of / The windows client is in the TEST folder. Currently, you can only play online with FodQuake. The LocalHost is broke.
