  • I'm trying to buy quake...

So Yea, I'm having difficulty getting this classic.
Ebay is out of the question.
Amazon is too expensive, and the cheap, used ones, you can't be sure whether they're shareware or not.
Steam... thats waaaay cheaper than id download, so it's my best bet...

    BUTT

If I download the 6.99 version from steam will I be able to extract the files from it and put it on a mac, and run it using GL quake? or will stupid, gay Steam RDM beat that idea down?

The Steam one will work fine. People are using custom engines while still on Steam so the content isn't "locked" so to say.

Yea but will it work completely independent of steam? because the computer I plan to put quake on is running 10.4 (mac) and it won't run steam.

they didn't modify the engine at all.
        buy+download quake. it'll download pak0.pak and pak1.pak somewhere.
you can just copy those files over to your mac and put them in some games/quake/id1/ directory somewhere. put a mac quake engine in games/quake/
if you've used steam before, the hardest part is finding a mac port that works fully.

disclaimer: I don't have steam nor a mac, but there are quake engines that find data files for quake by finding out where steam is installed. The pak files are the regular quake pak files.

I own all Quake games on Steam (except Quake 4, unfortunately still unavailable) and I can guarantee that Quake 1 and Quake 2 you can run normally without Steam if you install and execute any port (I didn't used a port in Quake 3 but mods should work too). You can even copy all Quake files to another directory, install a port then uninstall steam If you don't like the service (I wouldn't mind doing that though).

Note: It only works with games that require ports because they uses custom executables.

              Nice!

Do not forget to install for example Quakespasm so you get a robust experience even on modern hardware/operating system: Quakespasm

Well the OS is modern (Tiger 10.4) but the hardware is... not.
                Specs:
                800 mhz G3 PPC processor
ATI Radeon 7500 (I guess that's supposed to suck; I don't really know graphics cards that well)?
640 MB of SDRAM (that's fully upgraded with highest capacity chips)

As a matter of fact, this was the whole reason I went for Quake and Doom and such, because they are awesome games that this comp can actually handle (Halo: Combat Evolved is about the last thing that will run).

                Should I still use Quakespasm?

I'd definitely suggest the Steam route - there is just too big a risk that you'd get a DOS Quake CD (and all the pain and suffering that goes with that) otherwise.

If you can at all, I'd recommend replacing that Radeon 7500 with something even slightly more modern. It should run QuakeSpasm OK, but you'll get much better performance (and be able to run modern huge maps) with somethat that has even a little more grunt in it.

Well, downloading DOSbox and extracting it oldschool style from my original CD took me about 10 Minutes. Definately worth the work.

Well it's not too difficult for some but may be a bit overly involved for others, depends on the technical skill and confidence of the OP. Definitely not for everybody though.

you can just use xcopy * in ms prompt from recollection, if anyone did the steam route its in your program files/steam/steam apps/common/quake folder. All your quake files are there, including ur id1 folder. Just rar it an throw it on cd, if u wanna have a backup and not have to dl it again.

But doesn't matter now as he went with the trilogy anyways. =)
