Need more information. Are you trying to connect between houses, or just two computers within the same house? You might need to open a port on the firewall on the box running the server. Typically it's TCP port 26000.Originally posted by BananaJane View PostMe and my friend make a server and type the IP in and it tries for 10 seconds and fails

No, UDP, but that doesn't really matter. A standard Quake server needs to be in the DMZ in order for it to work properly, unless you're running a Darkplaces server, which requires only port 26000 UDP to be forwarded.e|------------------------0---------------

I think I already met this guy in QW. Apparently, the Steam community does a lousy job in informing new people. They also don't know that there's a difference between Quake and QW, or how to connect to a server. They basicly try to do everything via Steam, since that's what they do with all games bought through Steam.

Err... the Steam interface won't help with Quake, at all. To connect to Quake servers, you have to open the console, and type connect wherever, for example, connect quake.shmack.net will take you to the popular runequake server.e|------------------------0---------------

Putting your router into DMZ disables the firewall and opens all ports.
What you want to do is set up port triggering for 26000 and set a range of ports.WARNING

All the DMZ does is forward all ports to a specific network machine unless told otherwise (standard port forwarding takes precedence over the DMZ). It doesn't bring the whole firewall down.Originally posted by bluntz View PostPutting your router into DMZ disables the firewall and opens all ports.
