Download a client, and completely ignore anything Steam related to Quake.

This is the wise words of a Quake player who's avoided Steam since day one of its inception.

I recommend Qrack or DirectQ , Extract to where you installed Quake for either client.

DirectQ remains more faithful to the original Quake, and Qrack is a more updated graphically, but easily configured. Run the clients from within the Quake install folder, I create shortcuts to glQrack.exe and/or DirectQ.exe place them in XWindows dock or my Desktop

You can utilize the Server browser on the homepage to gain access to servers via the client(s) you chose to download.

Tilde key [~] opens console, to connect to a server use this format.

    connect rage.quakeone.com

when servers specify a port, the format is like this

    quake.shmack.net:26001

Your error is DirectDraw releated, make sure you have updated video drivers for your videocard.

This error is due to the fact that the engine is trying to use a resolution/refreshrate that the driver doesnt support, something like 320x240. If you ever get this error on a modern engine, like JoeQuake, use -current in your command line parameter to force initialization of you video to the desktop specifics. I would recommend DirectQ for starters or FitzQuake. Qrack works too, (shameless plug), and DarkPlaces or FTE is the top tier.

Sounds like software quake that the original came with is being used, as it defaulted to a low low resolution like u said 320x240.

I know a complicated work around, that works to play within steam.

Or, you can just do the simple route.

          Drag-drop your "c:\program files (x86)\steam\steam apps\common\quake"

Into your desktop or another drive, and download a new client... proquake 4.00 or > or qrack or any of these other clients out there. THen run the new client from the quake folder.

          Should load without problems.

If you want the complicated method to getting steam to run quake, within steam.

You have to download a new client and extract it to steam's path (listed above).

When you do, you have to rename glquake.exe to glquake.bak and rename your new client's exe to glquake.exe then when steam loads the launcher you select glquake, and it will load the new client.

          Then it will run fine.

          Shrugs.

          Up to you.

The bitch is, that steam will not back up your renamed glquake.exe (meaning you will loose the new client) each time you load a backup of quake for steam.

Less you rar it or zip it or w/e it yourself and store it somewhere then just extract it over these files. (also never validate your install) within steam it will replace the renamed exe again.

          ~Cheers, gl.

An alternative for WinQuake is to run with -startwindowed (which should have been the default from the outset IMO) then switch to the mode you want after start up. I'm not sure what's involved in doing this, or even if it's possible, if you launch Quake via Steam itself.

More and more modern GPUs and monitors are just not capable of fullscreen modes below 640x480. It's a good idea for clients to start dropping support for these modes as untimately they only will cause trouble for the player.
