    congrats on buying quake!

the easiest way is simply to join a teamfortress server and the files will download automatically (more on that later)

the best choice you can make right now tho, is to migrate your quake installation away from steam. you will save yourself headaches and have the freedom to enjoy quake to its full extent.

all you have to do is make a a new folder , say "c:/games/quake"
next, inside there, make a folder called "id1".

go to your quake installation inside the steamapps, search for 2 files,"pak0.pak" and "pak1.pak"

copy them into your new "quake/id1" folder

Now you are completely free of steam and can start having a real quake experience

first since you want quakeworld, i would suggest to download EZquake which is a quakeworld client , (a quick google will find it) , or google "nQuake" for an installation package which includes EZquake and some extras like newer graphics, common maps, etc.

then you can run ezquake ,hit tilde (~) to bring up the console, then you can connect to a teamfortress server and all the files will download automatically.

    for example: connect 74.86.171.201:27502

thats it and you'll be playing teamfortress online.

to find other servers visit quakeservers.net

There is another forum specifically for quakeWORLD players, as opposed to just Quake players, its at QuakeWorld.nu - Your portal to everything Quake! . You'll be better off joining there for any quakeworld questions. altho this forum is equally if not more fascinating =]

good luck, you can still post here and msg me for help.

Ok so none of this is done from steam. You can close steam for now =)

You want to go to your "My Computer" from your desktop or your start menu.

There you will see a list of drives on your computer, go into your C:\

From there , Right-click on the blank area and select New > Folder , then type in "Quake"

You will see the folder appear. go into it by double clicking it, then again in the blank space Right-Click and select New > Folder, name it "ID1"

          You now have created C:\Quake\ID1\
Your new quake installation will be there.

Then , still within My Computer, you want to go back to C:\ , then navigate to your Quake's installation within Steam. This is usually C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\id1

There you shuld find the 2 files you need to copy over. Pak0.pak and Pak1.pak

You can right click pak0.pak , select "copy" , navigate to your C:\Quake\ID1\ folder, right click the blank space inside, and select "Paste"

Do the same for Pak1.pak , and you are done.

You shuld now have Pak0.pak and Pak1.pak inside C:\Quake\ID1

Sounds like alot to explain, but it really only takes a minute to do.

THen, you can download ezquake here: Download ezQuake from SourceForge.net

Going through the installation process, just make sure to select "C:\Quake" as your installation folder.

Ha! it worked, i saw you in the server =]

Nquake is basically a newbie-friendly installer including ezquake + a lot of extras to make the game look better. Try it out.

read about it here: NQuake - QuakeWorld Wiki
