  • server changed my settings?

I was on rage.quakeone.com and alt-tabbed for ~30 mins. When I went back into quake, I had obviously been kicked off the server. I then went to ctfbot.servequake.com because the servers page said there were a few people on there. Anyway, after cycling through a few download screens, I was still stuck in the console, but connected to the server. I just quit and went to dm.quaketx.com and several things are different now.

I am moving very slowly both side to side and front an back. My cl_forwardspeed command was changed.

    My crosshair is missing.

That's all I've noticed so far, but this is annoying as shit and I'm confused about what's happened here. Anyone know?

wow ok, so I changed the noticeable settings and went back to ctfbot.servequake.com and that server definitely changed these commands!! is it just me or is that completely nuts?

it's changed cl_forwardspeed and cl_backspeed to 200 and cl_sidespeed to 175, the only other thing I noticed was that I had no crosshair, so crosshair 0 too.

this is pretty absurd IMO, why would the host of the server have it setup like this??

some mod features depend upon clients being set up some way.
take quakerally as an example. your car needs high speeds forwards, but the side speed should be really low, because a strafing car is stupid. mods/servers do it because the authors know of no other (easy) way.
mods are also unable to query the previous value, so cannot restore your previous setting. They can only reset the var to its default value, or rather whatever the author decrees that it should be.
probably this server expects you to be using the +speed command the whole time - remember that for cl_forwardspeed, 200 is the default while 320+ (commonly 400) is what sane people use.
typically you can see exactly what the server/mod is breaking in your client by setting developer 1 and reading all the 'stuffcmd: foo' prints.

a couple of engines attempt to sandbox cvars, like my own, but that's not without its own problems (like mods with centerprint-style menus loosing their client-side settings on every single map change).

some servers may not like how you have your game setup (idk why?) and they change it, it could be a mod or something or they changed it in that time!
