  • Quake on Windows 7, Acer Laptop

I play Quake on an old Dell desktop (WinQuake) and it works fine, but I wanted to know if it can play on my laptop. None of the Source Ports seem to not have an auto-center view action added. I still play Quake, Doom, and even Wolfenstein 3d, but I still play with the old school control (I hate WASD controls) So a mouse is rarely needed when I play any games at all on my PC (I play modern games on an Xbox).

So How'd I play Quake on an Acer?

    Use DirectQ: mhquake

Turn mouse look off in options or via the console.

If you've got D3D9 or better class hardware, DirectQ is the way to go. Nuthin' like shameless self-promotion, eh?

Nobody ever comes back and says DirectQ won't work on my computer and since it has mouse look in the menu they never come back and say how do I use the mouse?

[And with Quakespasm I figure someone new on Windows would end up would do something goofy with the sdl.dll to make it not work ... or unzip all the Qrack files into one folder or their computer restarts when they double-click DarkPlaces.]

Enabled by default as well so they don't even have to go to the menu. Which is as it should be, it is the 21st century after all.

Well, he's kinda trying to make sure mouse look is OFF. Heheh.

I notice stuff like that, so with these kinds of questions I try to give the one answer that just can't possibly go wrong.

Because it is so frustrating to not be able to start the game. And after that works, at least it runs.

No, what I mean is like when you press "A" or "Z" you look up and down, and while walking for a while it would go back to center view. Also when I press "END" key, it tells me I can't do centerview.

                bind "END" "force_centerview"

That should work in DirectQ/ProQuake/Qrack (not all clients support it)

Note: force_centerview does not work with mouse look on.

Although you can always do ...

                  bind END "-mlook; force_centerview; +mlook"

... if you plan on playing with mlook on

Hmm, funny, as it has always worked fine for me

Ok, well centerview now works, but the auto-centerview is still not going for me. If you're not sure what I mean, play the DOS or even N64 Quake (also WinQuake too) press A or Z and you will look up or down, after moving about 2 steps you auto center. This is something I really can't play without!

I removed the auto-centerview from DirectQ some time back as it was proving to be as buggy as hell. I hadn't actually anticipated this requirement and had assumed that everybody - even laptop users - would play with mouselook these days (I actually use a laptop myself most of the time nowadays, and while a touchpad does take some getting used to, it is possible and worth the effort. I'm not exactly a high-skillz player either but I've completed Doom 3, Quake 4 and Rage using a touchpad.)

I'll put it back in the next one, but I really do recommend putting in the effort to use the touchpad.

Thank you MH, yeah, I know I really should try and get use to modern mouse and keyboard controls haha
