  • an unhandled exception occured

today i found my old quake 1 disc and wanted to try it again, just for fun.
I downloaded DirectQ to fix compatibility problems.
then i had a d3dx9_43.dll problem that i fixed downloading a microsoft package.

after extracting i copied the DirectQ files to the game folder.
when i try to open the game or the DirectQ a black screen opens, then following error came up and shut down the game

    'an unhandled exception occurred'

anybody knows how to fix the problem??

Could be any one of a billion things, unfortunately.

One thing I know for certain does crash on startup is if you have any PK3 files with BSPs in them - that's going to be fixed in the next release (Saturday!)
    IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

I'm getting the same issue where DirectQ gives me a d3dx9_32.dll error, and have a pristine install of Win7 running DirectX 11.
What MS package did you install, vinzilla?

I'm having little luck so far with several of the clients. Darkplaces has this odd annoying flicker, and water surfaces just appear solid white.
GLQuake is super dark and has issues, gonna try Fitz next.

Has anyone ever just downloaded the newer version of Quake1 from Steam? It was released in 2007, I wonder how that would fare. I don't feel like gambling the 10 bucks just yet though.

I've heard it same many times, so I'm merely repeating whats been said before hand....

Download this ; Download: DirectX Redist (June 2010) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

ps : That Steam version of Quake = nothing to write home about, You'll still need all the same as you would need if you hadn't bought from Steam. I personally think Steam adds another layer of nonsense that isn't needed.

I'll try that.. I had run across it but wasn't sure about it as it's 2 years old.

Thanks for the info on the Steam version too. That'll save me $10.
