  • Video card champs: DarkPlaces, FTEQW, Fitz, ProQuake

OpenGL Video Tests, this post doesn't apply to non-OpenGL which almost always work for any computer. No special textures or non-default effects were turned on for any of these tests. Vanilla Quake-like, just pak0/pak1, no special models/charsets or anything

All this talk lately of video cards that suck, made me think. Today, being Memorial day, I managed to get my hands on someone else's laptop with one of these horrific Intel onboard video cards.

    The results for Open GL:

    ProQuake: Flying High
    EZQuake: Crashes
    FuhQuake: Crashes

Hmmm ... not good on QW side so far, trying less graphics fancy clients:

ZQuake: Crashes (weird, I could have sworn that was gonna work)
MQWCL: Crashes (Huh? I would have bet the farm on that one)

And then interest of completeness (Quake):

    JoeQuake: Crashes
    QRack: Crashes
    FitzQuake: Flying High!

Then ... I saved these for last as I just knew they were gonna crash:

    FTEQW: Flying High! (Holy shit!)
    DarkPlaces: Flying High! (Holy shit!)

This test was on an Intel 82852 GM display adapter in some Dell laptop. Newer in Intel display adapters seem to do better.

Anyway, to my surprise, some of the clients I most expected to work (QW: ZQuake, MQWCL) failed and the 2 clients I thought for sure fail because they are more advanced, passed!

So ... if you have bad GL video card luck, try DarkPlaces, FitzQuake, FTEQW and ProQuake as they might succeed where others fail. Apparently sometimes being the most advanced (DP, FTEQW) does not mean the most fragile.

Gl ProQuake doesn't run on my laptop with a Radeon Mobility 7500, but Qrack does. Go figure.

Yeah, that sounds insane. I wish all display adapters could reliably run all Quake clients. Many can, of course. It's just certain

      Long live Win ProQuake/Win JoeQuake!

DarkPlaces is the least fragile engine out there

I hate it when people think it's only for high-end card.... LordHavoc probably spends even more time optimizing it for low-end cards and/or so it will run as fast as possible (I can get 1000 fps (capped) in a RA map in DP on a high-end card )

I used Darkplaces on my desktop computer which has ATI Radeon 9200. It crashes for some random reason after 2 to 10 minutes of play.

Works fine on my linux laptop which has no graphics card. Still slow (maybe slower) but doesn't crash.

I think the difference is that LordHavoc and Spike are serious and dedicated coders who care about the community on a deeper level then most.

SPike and L.H. are hard core coders. I believe Lord Havoc has pretty much rewritten everything in his engine! Which in turn allows for a solid set of optimizations. As of the last release of DP, my entire charset (both the tga and the wad file) seem to be off by 1 character. I have has this happen on previous cards and other versions of DP, so on my console a is b b is c c is d etc..
so all i see is a bunch of jibberish. Though the 2004 version works just fine :/

Zenex and I were openly speculating about the DP source code, LordHavoc informed us that only 3% of it are unmodified id lines. So it pretty much is its own engine, only with complete Quake compatability.
