  • Making maps.

So, can someone explain to me about the three windows used in making maps.

    X,Y

    and the such.

R00k gave me BSP , from BSPHEADQUATERS. I am wanting to make a square room, obviously, first step is a baby one.

First you insert the X hole into the Y hole and then you insert/exit/repeat for a bit then you have a map. So this is how i was told to do it yeeeears ago. basically was told to fuck off.

I am not familiar with BSP but, I can still help you some.

X,Y: is the 2D (orthographic view) of the width(x) and height(y) of the map. This could also be considered the front view.

X,Z: is the 2D view of the width(x) and depth(z) of the map. This could also be considered the top view.

Y,Z: is the 2D view of the height(y) and depth(z) of the map. This could also be considered the side view.

perspective view: (or named equivalent) allows you to view the map from any angle and location

note: I tried BSP a while back and I didn't personally like it much. If you want something really easy to use you might want to look into Worldcraft.

I found it easy to learn how to use BSP by loading up one of those GPL .maps and just messing around.

if i remember right one view is straight down (Y?) one is straight sideways (X?) and one gives you a 3d view (XY?) that you can rotate and change depending what you are working on.....thats what i remember from Qoole and Worldcraft anyway.

Mindz, did you get it to work?

Look ... I don't personally know of any released maps made in the last several years using the BSP editor. I don't know if this means something.

At the same time, I made the Worldcraft 3.3 Quake Adapter and while you would have to disable UAC under Vista (gee I made it only 6 years ago --- back in the XP days so I didn't know about, say, Vista back before it was sold --- sorry), a super-ass loadious maximus of people have made maps using it.

In single player, RickyT23 has made some award-winning maps with it and countless PSP modders (like as in total absolute newbies) have used it to make maps --- not because they are mapping masters but because it is easy as pie.

                Quake Adapter for Worldcraft 3.3

P.S. A literal search for "Quake adapter" yields 7,500 search results in Google and Google will try to autocomplete it with the word Worldcraft 3.3. I'm saying that facts back all of this up with user usage. Even a complete dummy --- and some of them are --- can make a map in 10 minutes with the Quake Adapter. I would know ... I made the RQuake intro map with it In 3 hours. I also made the Rocket Arena Gateway with it. And the Undergate with it. It's freakin easy to use. MDave made the complete Kurok mod (12 levels) with it.

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

This isnt about what editor is better its about basic concepts of mapping. I have made several maps using BSP, that's the one I suggest because I have experience using it. Worldcraft wasnt free so I never used it. GoldenBoy would suggest Radiant as he has made more maps than I, and it is used to make more maps than any other Quake editor combined.

For the sake of completeness to help, I tried to install the Quake adapter. It looks for WC in "c:\program files\worldcraft3.3" though when installing WC, Windows 7 puts it in "C:\Program Files (x86)"... so just make sure u first install WC in the folder the adapter wants it in...

There is a tutorial that comes with WC3.3 that covers everything (basically). I believe it is in the install folder after install. I started with WC3.3 over 2 years ago. At some point within that time I started the become a quake modder thread. Due to Golden_Boy challenging me to use something different, I DL'd Radiant and picked it up (in its most basic form) almost immediately.

WC3.3 is a good gateway drug. If you have any problems setting it up (after install). I wrote a basic tutorial that should simplify the process for you.
