  • Can't connect to any server.

I want a few of my friends to play Quake so we got it for them and installed Qrack for both of them. But they can't join any servers.

Yes, they both have Quake and Qrack correctly installed and they can run them just fine. The only problem is that they can't join servers at all. They always just get the "still trying..." message when they try to join.
I can join just fine myself and I have the same client setup and everything as them.
They have tried running the client as administrator and giving firewall access.
They also installed the newest ProQuake client and tried that but they still couldn't connect.

The servers they tried to join were the both euroquake servers and the flanders servers. Again, I can join them perfectly fine myself.

Some help would be appreciated. I really don't know what's happening anymore.

Might have an odd situation where you need to use DarkPlaces.

It's network code is substantially different and seems to deal with messy situations better (where perhaps for one reason or another, ProQuake and Qrack are getting confused about where the valid internet connection is).

One way to know if this is likely to work is to type "test2 quake.shmack.net" in the Quake console on one of the computers that isn't connecting using ProQuake or Qrack or whatever.

If it works (it prints server settings to the console), the likelihood of DarkPlaces working is high.
If it doesn't work, you've got a firewall issue or router issue or some Windows/anti-virus stopping something.

Sounds like it might be binding on the wrong ip. Add this to the commandline
      -ip $mypublicip
You'll need to figure out the ip to bind on yourself.
Failing that, try either FTE or DP as clients, either of these two clients shouldn't have the binding-on-wrong-ip issue.

while were on the subject of ip's and binding them, i have a question. i host a server every now and then and almost every time i do it the server crashes when changing maps. the console says "cant bind (ip):26000". i added the -ip (ip address) switch to my batch file, yet i still have the problem. i always make sure to check my ip so that it matches what i have binded to my server. btw, im using pq 493 as my exe. so, any other ideas as what the problem is?

syluxman, looks like changing the 'port' command can result in the game unbinding then rebinding. if the unbind is delayed (but not blocked) by some other program (a firewall, VPN, tunnel, or malware, any of which running at application level rather than kernel level), then quake will be able to rebind the port that it just unbound.
it should be safe to issue this command: "listen 0; listen 1". If doing that causes the error, then you know its some other app in the background breaking things for you.
Make sure the mod you're running doesn't execute any "port" commands either from execing a config file or from the gamecode directly.
Other than that I can't help you. As far as I'm aware your issue is unrelated to gigabit's issue, at least in cause.

Alright, installing DarkPlaces worked and at least the other guy can join servers now.
The problem he has now is that when he joins a server, all his textures are just black.
I know this isn't really related to the topic anymore but I thought I might as well ask about this too.

Does he have the map? Darkplaces will put u on a server even without the map, and all u see is blackness with the entities scattered around...

                  We solved it now.

The game was bugged because he had installed Quake on an external hard drive. After he moved the game to his internal hard drive, everything started working.
