  • Need REAL basic help getting quake going

I played this game 50 hours a week back when it was new, now I would like to get my nephews going on it and relive old times. Is there a real basic step by step "for dummies" tutorial somewhere? I've downloaded qrack and proquake and billions of bytes of maps but man i just cant even get 1.06 unpacked using windows XP sp3.

Here's a guide I wrote years ago, seems to have successfully helped quite a few people so hopefully it helps you too: mhquake: Installing Quake using DOS Box

I did most of the work for that on Windows 7 by the way, but it should also apply to XP.

I'm way confused. Why are you guys recommending he use DOSbox to get quake going?

I agree with fuzznut. If you have the files from Quake, simply copy the pak files into a folder called "Quake" and then use the engine of your choice. Darkplaces for modern graphics is recommended as is Qrack and DirectQ. For a classic look you can use Qrack, DirectQ, Proquake and others. Dosbox I would not recommend due to requiring some more knowledge. Copy and paste the pak files.

I guess we should ask what type of copy of Quake do you have first?

            lol dosbox
(he might have a DOS Quake install disc, extremely possible!)
            Get Quake (probably already done)
Get updated client (Needs to be done)

Run the Quake client (modern engines are availible all over quakeone.com / go to the engine websites like QRACK to get the most up to date ones.

you only need pak0.pak and pak1.pak to start.

            C:\Games\Quake\enginehere.exe!!
            C:\Games\Quake\id1\pak0.pak and pak1.pak here!!

Some people have the original QuakeCD and are trying to install from that.

In that case you use DOSBOX for it to work.

                  Dont need DOS for 1.06
Main things are delete opengl.dll and 3dfx and grab a new client.Qrack DarkPlaces Proquake ect..
