  • Latest Proquake + original Quake music

So I finally got around to trying out the latest Proquake, which I much prefer over Darkplaces as it doesn't change too much compared to the original.

Anyways, I decided I wanted to setup the original Quake music with my fresh install of Quake + Proquake, and I know that in one of the previous versions of Proquake you could put the original quake music files (in MP3 format) into a dir and play them in-game with Proquake.

However, after looking around in the settings, I couldn't find this option.

    So:

    1) What directory do you place the music files? (and which formats are supported? only MP3?)

    2) How do I actually get the latest Proquake to start playing the music?

ProQuake no longer supports MP3 music as of the 4.9x and forward.

My logic was this: ProQuake is highly geared strictly towards online NetQuake play. Online players do not use MP3 music (no one serious about winning, at least).

Likewise, I dropped fog support (if I recall correctly) and support for alpha entities (because no one is using Nehahra protocol 17 online) and dropped Half-Life map support (no one uses that online either).

DirectQ is more a general purpose client that can do single player (and multiplayer) extremely well, I would recommend using DirectQ for single player for the MP3 support.

Or you could use ProQuake 4.5x for single player.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I see, but for other than streamlining purposes, would it hurt anything to leave the MP3 support in? Or is it possible to add it back in for next version?

Incidentally, I have had the latest DirectQ on my HD for awhile, but haven't tried it until now when you suggested it, but again I don't see any information on explaining how to setup the MP3 system... Do you happen to know it works in DirectQ?

I removed largely unused features so I don't have to maintain them any longer. Like testing them and occasionally porting (i.e. the Mac version which gets an update from time to time). Cutting out the unused fluff makes it faster to update the engine and makes the engine more reliable (I removed CD track play support too).

I'd need some sort of real reason to add it back in, ProQuake is focused on online play and doesn't even support "big maps". I guess I'm saying I want it to be good at what is best at, so I intentionally and deliberately dropped what it isn't best at.

Unless there is a reason you have I'm not seeing?

DirectQ does virtually everything ProQuake does and has MP3 support. I think the music files go into the same place as ProQuake (i.e. quake\id1\music\track00.mp3, etc.) You might have to turn it on in the menu?

Not really, for personal reasons basically. I have used and stuck with Proquake since forever. IMO, it is the best all-around engine out of the 20+ engines I have tried out over the years. I guess Proquake is under different "ownership" now, but originally the motto of Proquake was to keep as close to the original as possible (but enable it to work on modern machines with better performance).

True the mp3 music support wasn't in Proquake until after what 4+ something? But it was a feature that made sense in that is was a lot easier to use mp3 files instead of a physical or even virtual CD.

So far, I am liking the latest Proquake, but I guess I just wish it had mp3 support still in it as I do usually still use it for single player modes. In contrast with DirectQ which so far now that I have used it a bit is a bit "clunky".

Anyways, just my 2 cents. Thanks for your replies and help.

DirectQ, clunky? Thats odd, because this is what I think of DirectQ

DirectQ supports external textures (you can use the faithful ones, that are very close to originals but only higher quality)

I'll restore MP3 capability some time before 5.00. Will likely be off by default.

              You made a persuasive argument
