perhaps this is a dumb question, but i was forced to download d3dquake in order to play in windows xp, and as a result, i am unable to play mods because q1 wants to be registered. The mod i want to play is reaperbot. It's been a long time since i played q1...how the hell do i get it to work?

First, the XP issue:

Any Quake should works fine in Windows XP, download any client in the Files section

QuakeOne.com Quake Clients Section (Files --> Quake Clients)

And all of those listed should do Windows XP just fine.

Unless for some reason you can't do OpenGL

And in that case I would recommend JoeQuake.exe (which is non-GL) ... yeah it's not going to be as pretty as it is basically an improved WinQuake, but it will work.

If you want to be a beta-tester

You could try FTEQW, which is sort of a multi-Quake client and despite the QW in the name, is supposed to be able to run regular Quake mods. I've run FTEQW and it ... well ... most people can quickly 2 or 3 things that don't work right, but it's a cool idea (FTE Site.)

The reason I mention FTEQW is it has a Direct 3D mode which might help you if you can't do OpenGL.

About not having registered Quake

You are really supposed to have registered Quake to run mods, but at the same time the fact is that many engines don't care about that.

ProQuake cares if you have registered Quake, FitzQuake probably cares and aside from those 2, I can't name a popular engine that cares about whether or not your Quake is registered. Truth be told.

That being said, you are probably better off with registered Quake because you might get errors that certain models are missing, but I am guessing that some engines like DarkPlaces that seem to not always care about missing models and such it might work if you have the maps.

You can always buy Quake at E-Bay or ...
