  • big noob here got some questions?

ok sick of all these new games coming out so i decided to head back to the old school stuff. but its been so long i have no clue where to even start with this stuff?

i got a old copy of quake v1.09 or whatever it says when it starts up.

now are there updates for it? what should i even download to begin?

of course i got a machine way beyond quake requirements

athlon 64 blah blah blah blah anyway

just curious what i should download so i can start playing online and stuff again

i also have a 600mhz 200 mb ram old computer that i would like to possibly set up a server for some kinda gameplay mode. either Team fortress possibly or CTF or something. the box is just sitting around wasting space.

anyone can help me out i'd be happy just cause there are so many different verisons of this and that and this and that, and i havent been on the quake scene in forever.

    xfire : blazt4me

thx in adv. anyone can help me out

Here's a quick and easy start to get back in. In advance, you're going to download Proquake and transfer your pak0.pak and pak1.pak files from your CD to the Quake directory.

    Lets get started:

    1) create a quake directory. example, C:/Program Files/Quake/. It really doesn't matter where you put it n most cases.

    2) download proquake and put it in your Quake folder. You can get openGL or you can get winquake (GLquake is more graphics intensive while winquake can play on almost anything). You shouldn't require a really nice graphics card for GLquake as it's just a small improvement from winquake.

    Download Proquake here: http://proquake.planetquake.gamespy.com/

    3) create an folder called ID1 in your quake directory: C:/Program Files/Quake/ID1/

    4) go into your Quake CD and take out the pak0.pak and pak1.pak files. Put those files into your ID1 folder.

    5) double click on the proquake exe and you should be playing quake!

let me know how it goes

I'd recommend using the ProQuake 3.50 EZ Installer, it does a better job plus installs the security module and all known loc files.

That's just my opinion, doesn't really matter how you install it.

          Command line:

          c:\quake\glpro.exe -width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32 -conwidth 512 -conheight 384

The conwidth stuff will make it so your letters aren't microscopic.

          You might also consider:

          c:\quake\glpro.exe -width 640 -height 480 -bpp 16

As you will get much higher FPS (about double) if you aren't using the latest and greatest graphics card.

crosshair 1 -- turns crosshair on
              +mlook

(QRack, JoeQuake 0.15 and DarkPlaces have mouselook on by default.)

For ProQuake, add +mlook to c:\quake\id1\autoexec.cfg and it will always be on. Be sure to add an extra line after the end of autoexec.cfg and it will always be on.

              // autoexec.cfg - basically a textfile
              +mlook
              // mandatory extra line

Yeah there's about a billion colour/brightness/contrast/gamma/puppy kicking settings in DarkPlaces. Just up the Gamma slider, I use 1.5.

It's great to see LordHavoc finally posted a build on the front page. Still, that build is 6 days older than the current one

Click here for the latest versions. If you suddenly experience a weird glitch or error with DarkPlaces, it could be an accidental typo in the code that wasn't noticed, and downloading a newer build would most likely fix it. Not that it would ever happen.

A good way to start, go to the Quake clients section in "Files".

ProQuake is the best client that is a direct replacement of GLQuake, for someone used to that.

If you'd like something more new skool, QRack comes bundled with a texture pack that includes fancy weapon models and nice textures. JoeQuake and DarkPlaces are also very good choices as well.

There is also plenty of information in the Guides section on about any topic you can think of.

To connect to one of the servers listed, for instance, in the servers block you type: CONNECT <servername> in the Quake console, like CONNECT QUAKE.SHMACK.NET, for instance.

If you have more questions, just ask them.

I am getting a glide2x.dll error or something when I start up qrack. It's something about glide2x missing. Any ideas?
