  • Best texture pack?/Help installing Pack

    Hi, I just bought Quake 1 off Steam and have never played it before. Since it seems like a great shooter with an active community, I decided I would install some texture packs, preferably one with the best graphical quality possible. I learned that Rygel's pack is the most popular, so I went and got Darkplaces (yes, it's installed correctly), the three Ultra parts for Rygel's pack, highlighted all three .rars, and extracted them into the id1 folder, creating one big pk3 in there. I've got PAK1 and PAK0 in the id1 folder too, so that's all good. Then I start up darkplaces.exe, and boom.

    "You have reached this menu due to missing/unlocatable content try setting basedir blah blah."

    I looked at the console and it appeared to be having trouble reading the pk3. I've tried putting all the pk3s in individually instead of combining them into one, no dice. I read that it's usually a matter of not having the PAK1 and 0 in the right places, but I have them. As I stated before, this is a legal copy.

    I did try the basedir thing, nope. So I'm basically stumped with this. I've done everything right.

    Can anyone tell me what's wrong or if there's a better pack available? I tried the high res instead of the ultra and that didn't work either.

    Been a while since I last used DP, but have you tried .PAK instead of .PK3?
    Also, which compression algorithm did you use? Best to use deflate for .zip or store uncompressed.
    I think you can even simply use a folder called id1...

      Compression algorithm? I didn't make any of this, I just downloaded the PK3s and extracted them into id1.

      I'm just trying to install a texture pack, I have no idea what a compression algorithm is.. I use winrar, if it means anything. And what do you mean use a folder called id1? I already have one. And I said leaving them as individual files doesn't work too..

      I'm confused... What texture pack are people using most now? How do I make them work? I've done everything right, read every guide. I'm not technologically inept.

          Does the game start up if you move the .pk3 file elsewhere?

                Unless this is a "Steam" version issue, here's my Rygel's setup:

                I have a folder called:

                "dp_rygels_quake"

                which contains an

                "id1" folder

                which has these files in it,

                pak0.pak*
                pak1.pak*

                AND pak2.pak <--- These are the water vis'd original maps in a higher sequentially numbered .pak file!

                Then I have what's needed for Rygel's coupled with Darkplaces "Pretty Water"

                rygel-dp-texturepack-high.pk3* properties(size - 935.3 MB (935,322,290 bytes))
                romirtlights_id1.pk3
                dpwater0.55.pk3

                That which is bolded is the least that's needed. Those are the only files for Rygel's for that folder. It works on my system.

                I literally have about fifteen "Quake" folders all with various mod's and stuff.

                The .rar's you downloaded, was it a multi-part archive? Is it supposed to recreate one lone .pk3(rygel-dp-texturepack-high.pk3)?

                Maybe the links got corrupted, can you share where you d'loaded them from?

                EDIT: Darkplaces is installed into the "dp_rygels_quake" folder of course!

                        Curiously, I think I downloaded it from here: File Library � games.on.net - Australia's #1 location for PC games news, reviews, servers and files! but I had to sign up in order to do so!!! I have no clue what login/password are even!

                        Maybe someone has an "easier" link. I used the "hi-res" as some say the Ultra just isn't worth it really.

                            Well, while that's downloading.. Can I have links to other stuff to make Quake look as pretty as currently possible? My rig can handle anything really, so just list the best stuff that's available. I can't seem to find them, there's lots of different packs and I'm new and blah.
