  • Rygel hires or QRP?

I noticed these two projects that redo all the textures and such, but I would imagine they're not compatible with one another. Which one is better, and which should I use?

id say QRP. some textures in rygels are more hi-res, but QRP textures are much more authentic to original textures.
some textures in rygels pack are quite different from the originals.

also, if you use QRP you can also use FCZ's additional gloss-maps he made specially for use with QRP textures:

and webangels animated&reflecting textures addon she made for ust with QRP textures, which looks brilliant too:

both of those addons for QRP textures from FCZ and webangel look really great and make quake look really great

    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <

Rygel is based on QRP, if I'm not completely mistaken. It just has lots of noise added.

For the longest time, I was using rygel's pack. I would switch to the QRP but miss some of the things about rygel's and go back to that. I think rygel's pack is based on an older previous release of the QRP-- then enlarged, with increased contrast, darkened textures, and a filter applied over them to make it looked aged, distressed, and grungy. I really dug this look because in my mind, Quake was this dirty industrial and ancient necropolis. However, the normalmap textures (what makes the textures look bumpy) in Rygel's pack are much more subtle. The QRP has, in my subjective humble opinion, superior bumpmaps. On the flipside, Rygel's has more glossmaps than the QRP, though quality is hit or miss.
Then I said to hell with it. Recently, I jumped ship and went to the QRP for good. QRP is still an active project with some level of activity on the QRP website. The mission pack textures maintained by the QRP don't fit very well with Rygel's, so it became something of a consistency issue rather than quality. Rygel, to my knowledge, has made no additions to the Quake texture modding community in years. That was my dealbreaker.
As other forum threads have attested to, even though Rygel's is based on older artwork from the QRP, the normalmaps and glossmaps 90% of the time do not match up.
There was a time, up until recently, I was taking photoshop and making a hybrid pack, mixing and matching individual textures' assets with the best of both. I got about 6 textures done and I realized I was putting a lot of effort for minimal return. I don't regret it because I learned some stuff in that period: nuances about layers, how to make bumpmaps, glossmaps, and lumamaps, and other stuff.
I tried to write this with giving pros and cons to each pack, but ultimately I chose QRP.
