  • How do I run the expansions with DirectQ Quake?

I know there is an thread above called "Mission pack 1 and 2 startup issues" but it did not help me much I am afraid.

Basically, I am trying to get the mission packs to run with DirectQ Quake but don't know how.

I guess I need to create 2 folders inside the main DirectQ folder (hipnotic and rogue) and put some expansion stuff there, but that alone probably isn't enough.

    Help anyone?

install the mission paks in the \quake folder (same place the directQ.exe is)
    so u'll have quake\rogue and \quake\hipnotic

create a shortcut, name it DQ_Rogue,
select properties and edit the commandline

    directQ.exe -rogue

    same for hipnotic

    directQ.exe -hipnotic

do NOT use the -game parameter as this will not load the special hud

        check your spelling.

        -hipnotic not -HIPNOTIC

always use lowercase for command line parameters in quake.

make sure you actually have a folder named "hipnotic" in the \Quake\ folder

          Still just get an error.

Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

Here is what I did step by step:

          1. I installed both Quake and the 2 mission packs via STEAM.

          2. I applied the Ultimate STEAM patch for both Quake and the mission packs.

          3. Later I decided I wanted to use DirectQ Quake instead for the more retro feel so I downloaded that.

          4. I copied the whole Quake folder (containing both the expansions and the ultimate quake patch) to another place and added the DirectQ stuff into it. After using the DirectQ exe the original Quake works just fine but I did not know how to use the expansions.

          5. After reading this thread I tried doing as you said. I created an extra copy/shortcut of the DirectQ.exe and attempted to change the "target" line from:

          "C:\Users\Notandi\Quake stuff\DirectQ Quake\DirectQ.exe"

          to:

          "C:\Users\Notandi\Quake stuff\DirectQ Quake\DirectQ.exe-hipnotic"

but then I just get some error about the path being invalid or something.

If I did something wrong then please correct me.

the -hipnotic part should have a leading space and be outside the quotes.
            "c:\foo\program.exe" -hipnotic

that way it runs 'program.exe' with argument '-hipnotic' instead of trying to run 'program.exe-hipnotic' and then complaining because that file does not exist.

I take back what I said.

While the first 5 or so levels worked fine I now have this very wierd bug where I can't play because my character just get stuck in the floor all of the sudden and then starts to slowly sink through it.

That's a longtime DirectQ bug, unfortunately. Try restarting the map.
It should be a very rare case where it happens. It seems to happens more in certain maps.
