  • Issue downloading maps

    Hey everyone,

Trying to get Quake to work and having some issues. I can get the servers to populate and attempt to download maps but think it might be hanging. Cannot attach a screen grab for some reason but it repeats "Web Downloading: maps/dm6.bsp (web location)" in the console over and over then will display server to client keep alive and vice versa and just keep trying. Behind firewalls of some kind I am sure, just trying to get this to run at work but have connected to the Quake3 web based games from this location without issue. Any help is appreciated let me know if I need to specify anything.

    Thanks!

I'm no quake expert but assuming you are using one of the latest quake clients such as proquake with a full [not shareware] version of quake, there are a couple of settings you might want to check first
    1. If you type cl_web_download in console does it return a value of 1? If not then set it to 1 using cl_web_download 1 in order to enable autodownloading
    2. If you type cl_web_download_url in console does it return one of the 2 valid download servers? For example, as I am in europe mine is set to bigfoot.quake1.net/ but I suspect the USA server is probably something like quakeone.com If it does not have a valid download server set it using cl_web_download_url bigfoot.quake1.net/ (or whatever your closest download server is) so that Proquake knows where to look in order to get your maps, etc

What should then happen is if you join a server and you do not have the custom map, as long as the download server has the map in the right location, it should download and reconnect you to the game automatically. If you want play ID maps other than the first Episode (eg not e1m1 through to e1m you need to buy the full version of quake which is probably just beer money these days.

    Hope this helps

or try connecting to xctf.quakeone.com I think is the address... it will only be running shareware maps in CTF mode. use this as your starting point?

i doubt bfrank will even respond.
though, in quakeworld land there is a gpl map pak floating around.
the pak contains dm1-dm6 and i think e1m2 all recompiled from the gpl sources with gpl textures. QuakeWorld.nu - GPL Simple Texture Maps - ALL

yes true rook i agree buy quake

my thought that it was ok was because id gave us the .map file so i thought all maps were gpl but there's more to pak1 then just maps

i hope you enjoy your quake BeFrank

like the textures? (which need him to buy quake before he may use them - except for those maps in the demo, anyway)

models, sounds, textures etc are not GPL. In other words, most of the game isn't GPL.

Im here just been working a lot and haven't had ability to check back. Thanks for all the info, I do need to purchase Quake and will do so this week. Found what I could on the internet and got it to a certain point. Although I did get into one server and it played one of the original maps I cannot get it to load again correctly. Monty it did return the correct values but assume issues are due to the SW version I have and not full game. Will reload and post back if I have questions. Thx for all the replies appreciate the help.

I wasn't involved in the autodownload project but I suppose, thinking about it logically, both the author of the quake engine you will use to fire off the download, and the owner(s) of the download repositories you will download from probably wouldn't accommodate maps/textures/models/sounds/etc that you would normally already have

Maybe Ebay, Gumtree or those tax dodging scumbags called [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00080LSOY/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used"]Amazon[/ame] might be the way to go ?

                          Kind regards
