  • Windows XP Multiplayer?

    Hey guys,

A friend of mine and I are trying to play Quake on a Lan. Both of our machines run Windows XP and we both use Winquake to play the game. When he creates a game and I type in his IP, I can see his game but cannot connect. He simply cannot connect.

We've tried disabling firewalls, etc. Anybody have any ideas as to how to get this to work?

    Thanks!

what IP are you typing in? The one that quake tells you when you type 'Status'? His WAN? His IP?

Also, are you just trying to connect using 'connect 255.255.255.255'? There's a LAN setting that should work fine.

well, we've tried several. I first used my IP as whatismyipaddress.com told me. I also used the one that quake gave me.

what's this you say about connect 255.255.255.255?

it's just a command you use to connect to the quake servers outside your LAN. I've never tried it for LAN, it might work.

        "connect enter_IP_or_DNS_here"
        "port enter_port_number_here" (26000 is default)

whatismyipaddress.com will give you your IP which is only useful when you want people outside of your LAN to connect to you.

Although I'm sure typing in STATUS shows you the same IP, try this:

START -> RUN -> type in "cmd"
now type in "ipconfig/all" and you'll find your IP address. You might also find your WAN if it's set up. Try that is all else fails.

You said you disabled your firewalls. Does that include your personal firewalls, windows firewall?

This guide should help you ...

Your internet IP is not the correct IP to use.

You might consider installing this on both computers --> http://www.quakeone.com/index.php?in...ile&file_id=13 and clicking Start -> Programs -> Quake -> Rocket Arena -> Listen Server on one computer and then type STATUS in the console and connect the other computer to that IP.

A LAN uses a Local IP, which typically begins 192.168.x.x; if you do Start -> Run -> Type "cmd" and press Enter and then type IPCONFIG, the first number beginning 192.168.x.x is usually your Local IP (LAN IP).

I tried all of the things you are recommending, and still nothing will work.

When I try to connect to my friend's game, it sees the server, but has an error connecting to it: Host_Error: CL_Connect: Connect Failed.

I installed the Rocket Arena pack and when I click on the Listen Server icon I get an error message that says: Unable to bind to my IP address

What router do you have? What firewalls are you disabling? Can your friend connect to your machine instead?

Are you by chance using DSL? DSL + LAN can be annoyingly confusing on a LAN.

If so ... what is your LAN IP?

Add -ip 192.168.1.100 (where your 192.168.1.100) = Your LAN IP) to the server command line.
