  • Chi Switches to CAx (w/low splash)

Phocus switched CHI from CA+ to CAx with low splash damage settings.

I wish CHI had something on the splash screen that said "Features CA+ reduced splash" because I think some players that don't know better will try to play "Bomber style" at CHI -- and that won't be successful at all.

When I connected to CHI and saw the CAx 1.56, the first thought I had was "is the splash CA+ style or Quake default?" I asked; no one knew. I played as if it were Quake default and had a terrible game and many players who have played back and forth between CA+ servers and other servers often are confused why their regular play style either does or doesn't work well on one type of server vs. the other.

CA+ and CAx are 2 different forms of Clan Arena, a round-based/team-play based "last man standing" mod where you spawn with all weapons and ammo and 200 red armor. You get 1 frag for every 300 damage you do to opponents and your team gets a win for each round won.

CA+ is a variation of the original Clan Arena and has been the dominant one for years and it featured heavily reduced "splash damage" and slightly lower direct hit rocket damage (capped at 100, instead of the default random 108-120 damage.)

Splash Damage is the damage you incur from a rocket or grenade that misses you, but explodes nearby.

With Quake default splash damage (like CRMOD/Bomber/CTF), a near miss might do 70-100 of radius damage. In CA+, that rocket will do maybe 35 damage.

As a result, if you are playing CA+, it is highly advantageous to attack with the lightning gun because unless you get a direct rocket hit in a close range fight.
/btw the ticrate at CHI feels like the Bomber one. I don't know if that is intentional. If CHI is trying to replicate the CA+ feel, they should make the ticrate 0.15 or something higher.

ps. people hate the h2o i dont see why drowning should take damage from your armor, the rate at which you die in water is the same duration as on ca+, but without taking armor points

I gave phocus the last known stable build from bomber, which is what is running curerntly on chi. Damage is standard, not low. Bombers now running the new build with splash variable. Once gets a few things ironed out in his latest build, I'm sure he'll make a custom build for chi.

water movement in cax is exactly like crmod.

I noticed CHI is back to CA+, at least for now. There is something old and crusty about CA+ which just can't be replicated, that makes the CA+ unique and enjoyable.

CA+ might be a little funky by certain standards, but there is something fun about how intense and personal the battles are. You really have to focus on an opponent to kill them, it never happens by accident and rarely by spam.
