Problem Hosting Game!!!

Ok, first of all, hi! I'm new around here, but I'l start coming here very often. I just discovered that I'm not the last Quake 1 lover that still subexists! Well, I live in portugal, and I play Quake 1 since december 1996, so I guess I'm good enough to stick my nose into this community
Coming on to business, I've got trouble hosting exclusively Quake... When I act as a server, to play the game with only 1 friend of mine, and he tries to connect, It gives me an error that the game names "READ ERROR". Funny Is that, 5 or 6 weeks ago, we were playing Quake, the same way, and it worked perfectly. It could be my new firewall, but I've released port 26000 from being blocked, in both ways, in and out. The IP that I give him is the correct one, and I've given Quake TOTAL permission. Does someone have a good idea to solve this? any mod or so? By the way, both quake versions are v1.09~.

I would recommend either both the client and server be ProQuake or both the client and server be DarkPlaces (do not mix them), both can be downloaded here and there are links to their home pages too.

I do not recommend Quake 1.09, unmodified WinQuake or GLQuake for anything under any circumstances as they have far too many issues -- especially when routers are involved. ProQuake and DarkPlaces do not have these issues with routers (but you still have to set it up right, of course).

After you are using either ProQuake or DarkPlaces as both the client and server, try it again and see what happens making sure that Quake is permitted and read the above link as well.

I had the exact same issue and fixed it by opening ports 25995-26005.
