  • Rage 2

Hey so a bunch of us were playing on rage.quakeone.net yesterday and dude came in and told us to go to an ip he posted. Entusastically buddy was saying this is 'the new rage' since almost everyone had posted lower pings at this chicago hosed server.

Whats the ip for this server if you know what im talking about? Are there intentions on flipping the addy for rage.quakeone.net to this server?

Myself, i was posting a 20 to 40 ping difference from alberta, canada. The small downside was the heafty packet loss messing up most peoples reacton time.

Right now rage.quakeone.com has been set to point to the new server in Chicago. rage2.quakeone.com will point to the old rage server. It may take up to 48 hours for your ISP to update it's DNS cache.

well thats just fucking gay. im not impressed in the least. WTF

why the fuck does the new server take over the old server's DNS? this is just purely gay homosexual shit going on.Rage2 is over-run with packetloss , and spikes beyond belief.

Chicago should remain RAGE2.QUAKEONE.COM , ClanHDZ should remain RAGE.QUAKEONE.COM

I am apalled and disgusted at this recent change. Just because Chad and a few other people ping 20-30 lower at Rage Chi , the ClanHDZ server (original Rage.QuakeOne.Com server) , it gets booted to the DNS Rage2 ? Thats fucked man...real fucked !

I've always used CA.quakeone.com before it was BOMBER, RAGE, etc.. so my question is...
DOES CA.QUAKEONE.COM point to the OLD Dallas based server or the new Chicago server?

The Chicago server is GREAT for Canadian players, though I think maybe a westcost server is in order... (where is Slot's cax server located?)

rage.quakeone.com = Chicago CAx Server (new)
rage2.quakeone.com = Old CAx Server on HDZ
          ca.quakeone.com = Same as rage2

Slot's CAx server (quake.crmod.com:26001 -- low splash CA+ style, non-cheatfree btw) is either in Chicago or St. Louis.

I have mixed feelings about this. There are going to be some players that got great ping @ Dallas that get sucky ping in Chicago (Mithril, iPariah, Saurak immediately come to mind .. but that's just a handful of the many).

I consider this Yellow's dept. (or at least not mine ) so whatever happens, happens.

The only thoughts I have on this are:

            1. There wasn't a net server gain in this (?) If there was, can the prior server be recomissioned. I think an annoying split in the CA community is about 65% only want to play DM3 and the other 35% would love to play anything EXCEPT DM3 because I like new stuff -- me being in the latter group so I personally think it would be cool for a custom maps only CAx server. I think more players would play if a custom map only server existed.

            2. The Bomber situation. The original host of Bomber got in a situation where there was not stability -- threatening the existence of the server. Could that happen in this scenario where 3 months down the road the continued existence of the server falls into question.

I don't really care about the answers; I just care that these concerns/thoughts are being considered.

I have nothing really to do with the server stuff - if someone wants DNS changed I do it, but a couple thoughts...

Not sure exactly what you mean but the old server is still up and rage2.quakeone.com points to it. If you don't like the new server you can go to rage2 and play. As for custom maps, almost everyone I see playing on the servers or talking on IRC only play dm3, edge, and the q3 map. If there really was a demand for these other custom maps, people would be voting them on the servers. I just don't see this demand you talk of. I know like 5 players who like to play the custom maps, and that's about it.

If there is a problem with keeping the server up and running, I'll just log into my server and set the DNS of rage.quakeone.com back to the HDZ CAx server. Updates should take between 24-48 hours depending on your ISP. For most that I know of, it took less than 6 hours when I switched it this time.

It's wrong for the "newer server" to take over a currently established server's DNS. This would be basically forcing the uninformed players of Clan Arena to play on the server of (Insert Name's) choice. The best example would be this , some one makes a better QuakeOne.Com website, and they run their own website with the same logo and the such, are you going to just give them YOUR domain name for the sake that its better? I doubt you will throw away your hard work on this website....Regaurdless of the choice you would make, the thought of such a proposition is rude and foul, and following through with such an idea is rude and foul. I'm not sure who requested the transition of ClanHDZ CAx losing its DNS and being given a new DNS to make way for someone else's "new server" which obtains not only the DNS that ClanHDZ had to begin with, but also the main player base of Quakers that used rage.quakeone.com:26000 as the address that they connected to play CAx. In my personal opinion, this is all wrong, and their is nothing right about it whatsoever.

I admit that I do not understand why this was done myself.

I don't remember anyone ever saying "Gee that HDZ server sucks, we need a new server". The HDZ server was pretty damn good.

                  Maybe someone will explain.

Well I'll explain what we've been up to. HDz has been and continues to be a great host, so thanks to vis and ava . However about 1/3 to 1/2 of people get a lot of packet loss when playing there, and for some poeple it's unplayable. Frenzy offered to pay for an essentrix server to see if this would make it better in general. The plan was to test it for a week and see how it was for people.

The reason we run our servers under our own dns is so that we can point them where ever we want and if a server goes down we merely need to setup a new one and point the dns at that. When busy quake servers go down often they players don't make a switch to a new server and the community suffers, like trinicom or widomaker or max going down. Because we have several hosts to choose from and control our dns, we don't need to worry about that.

I agree with what appears to be the concensus, that the people who play at rage do so because it is a good server for them, and it should continue to be where it is. The new server is a great resouce that we should use to help build the community.

I've been thinking we need to put up another CAx server anyway. The current rage is setup to be a newb friendly pub server. No cheatfree, allows cc'ing, and such. However some people would prefer another kind of CAx server that has no cc'ing, is cheatfree, 2 teams only and 4 players per team max. Could have low rocket splash too if people want. People complained about CAx's standard rocket splash/damage when the server first went up, but that was mostly because the ca'er were used to ca+. But no one complains about tha anymore because they are used to CAx and crmod now so I'm not sure a low splahs would be advisable, may just make it annoying to switch between the two. (And why is crmod 26001 set to low splash now? We used that as a backup tourny server so it's a problem if its not like the rest).

Anyway sorry for lack of posted info about the server switching, but we wanted to see what people thought if we just pointed the dns at the new one . And PS mindz you're a drama queen .

Oh and if people who get bad pings or packet loss to the hdz server could do some traceroutes and pings and such and determine where the problem is, maybe we can get that ironed out?

Just a note: mindz your comparison is wrong because the people who have worked on the HDZ rage server are the ones who made the decision to switch the DNS.

The DNS has been reverted as of now.

                        ca.quakeone.com
                        bomber.quakeone.com
                        rage.quakeone.com

All point to hdz cax server

                        rage2.quakeone.com

Points to the new cax server in chicago.

Thanks for reverting things, its appreciated!

as for being wrong about my comparison, not true, I spoke to r00k/Sput last night and he was oblivious to everything, and there wasnt mixed feelings involved about it.

Just so theres no confusion,im the one who's done nearly 99% of the bitching about these changes for myself and others,if anyone wants to get pissy over the reverted changes, they can address them to me,not Sole.

The switch from HDZ to the Chicago server was sudden and no one explained it.

Normally, I would have expected a news post from whoever saying "Rage Is Moving To Chicago" and here are the reasons and benefits from whoever was making the decision.

My main concern is/was (?) the number of players whose pings were dramatically worse at the Chicago server (Tunda had 350 ping, earlier I was playing with 3 guys who had 100-130 ping that were previous 70-80ish).

A number of players do get better ping at the Chicago location, but that is little consolation to the players whose ping shot up into the "barely playable zone".

For future reference: It might be notable that servers like Shmack and CRMOD.com are in Essentrix St. Louis and not Chicago. It seemed like a fairly large chunk of players had bad route to the Chicago Essentrix location.
