Within a couple of weeks I'll be back behind a pretty restrictive firewall, most importantly no UDP. Is there any way to play Quake online through it?

configure your firewall to all quake UDP ports. But that's unsafe since you'd be opening 1024-65535.
Or use Darkplaces which might be able to get through the firewall

Well, if the firewall was mine I'd just tweak it
It's a uni connection, and the residential network is pretty watertight. I'll try Darkplaces, though, cheers.Comment
