  • Newbie Question: How to control server Monsters/entities?

    Please excuse the newbie question but I'm running a Quake server for a small LAN party shortly and have been asked if there is an option available in Coop mode which enables the server to specify the number of monsters to appear in the level, perhaps something along the lines of...
    Code:
    wqpro.exe -dedicated 16 -monsters 50
    Any helpful ideas would be gratefully received.:d

    That would only work if you modded the progs106 source. Thankfully that's not a hard thing to do :]

      Thanks for taking the time to reply CS. It might have been fun to max out a level or two with plenty of shamblers, an axe, and an abundance of quads.

        It won't be difficult to add a sort of limiter with a console command like gamecfg or scratch1 (type those in console with a number), but no mod currently supports it. There is also a certain preset number of monsters in each level, but keep in mind, when you want to reduce it by one, it'll just take off the last one in the list, which pretty much could be any monster. To add a monster, the mod would have to keep randomly searching for an area to put the new monsters. What that means is that it's not impossible, but it's more of a ugly hack.

        If you want more shamblers, it'd be easy to turn a certain amount of other monsters into shamblers, though.

          Thanks for the ideas Zop. Much appreciated. I know the Deathmatcn plus mod, which I shall probably use, allows you to place
          items (ammo/weapons/powerups) on any map when you are in admin mode, but it can't do that with monsters and anyway it would have been nice feature to have a general setting that did it automatically. Oh well never mind, I was hoping to avoid this due to some sever constraints on my time but I can see I'm going to have to follow in the footsteps of the quake luminaries like yourself and bite the bullet and start to learn QuakeC. :d

              The Soul of Evil mod also has a DMSP mode with its own monsters.

                Telejano also support a DMSP mode builtin in the engine:

                mod_cityofangels 1
                (you can try with different numbers, 1 will spawn wizards, 2 dogs, 3.. etc..)


                I agree everyone. No mod support what you ask. But will be easy to create:
                A mod that limit the max of monster, and to disable some mosters.

                        For unmodified Quake, to my knowledge it can't be done. It *might* be possible for DarkPlaces or some other engines to do sv_cheats 1 and it work for all players.
