newbie help

ok. haven't played quake in 8 years or so and need some help getting back on track

using nquake with ezquake which works just fine.

hear a lot about prolaunch, tried it and didn't seem quite as user friendly ingame, anyone have comments?

big problem though is ping inconsistency and packet loss
every few minutes or so my ping will soar and i'll loose a bunch of packets. i'm behind a router, but i don't see how forwarding a port would be of much use seeing as each server uses a different one. any tips?

nearly forgot
can ezquake and prolaunch be used together?
tried to install prolaunch into nquake folder, but it didn't seem to agree that it was the right folder for quake.

The prolauncher is for proquake only (I'm assuming you mean the proquake launcher that Baker implemented). So in order to use the launcher, you'll need to download proquake here: http://proquake.planetquake.gamespy.com/

Also keep note that ezquake runs QuakeWorld. Proquake runs NetQuake (original Quake). They are two separate communities and you can't join a quakeworld server with a netquake client, and vice versa. Unless you use darkplaces.

got another stupid question. why are all the enemys blue. i thought qw downloaded whatever skin the other players were using

i've tried it on both computers in my house, starting a game with a specific skin, and joining the game on the other computer, but all the enemys are blue. in ezquake it asks what skin you want your enemys to have...but can't you just download their on skin?
