  • Multiskin mod/files/skins?

Sorry for the intrusion but I'm hoping one of you quake 'divas' will take pity on me and could point me in the right direction for a specific mod/set of files. What I'm trying to do is get the server side Deathmatch plus (DMP) mod to work with the skins in the multiskins mod such as the Terminator, Capt Picard, Stormtrooper, Judge Dread and the like. I recall the skins used to be fun when playing the multiskin mod and made a nice change from the regular quake marine, and looking at some of the source code there seems to be some built in capacity for this in the DMP mod itself. What I need are the files (or the .mdl file if that's what's needed) that produced the skins and some indication of where I need to put them (possibly id1/skins/? or quake/dmpfolder/?). Googling has so far just provided me with a lot of [sadly] dead links.

It just seemed like a fun idea to see a stormtrooper and arnie going at it. Polarite used to play with the skins on a DMP server in europe and is being kind enough to scan through his significant quake archives but, just in case he can't locate the required files(s), if anyone has any ideas as to where I can find it/them and would be kind enough to let me know I would be most grateful.

    Kind regards

    Monty

This would work.. that is.. only for Qrack i guess.. it has nothing to do with the mod itself tho.. but i guess the end result is pretty much the same.. and fun

Thanks for responding peg. I'd need to be at home to check this to be sure but as i recall I already have this installed and it didn't seem to work when you and I tested the server the other night. Maybe we could try it later just to rule it out? I'm getting a suspicion it needs a certain .mdl but getting my hands on the damn thing is the problem Needless to say as soon as some kind individual enlightens me I'll put it in the downloads section and link it in the DMP news article.

      Thanks anyway

You could create your own custom player.mdl with all the skins you want.
I did this in Qrack, by modifying the original player.mdl adding 12 skins,(1 for each team color). In the engine side of things with cl_teamskins 1 it would switch to the skin # based on your pants color. Also using external 24bit texture support ie player_0.tga , player_1.tga etc.. it allows hires 24bit textures for the player model.

        So, in a nut shell, using QME, import the skins that u want in player.mdl. In the mod for FFA allow an option (1) Storm Trooper which points to skin #1 (2) Arnold which points to skin #2, then just change player.team and player.skin accordingly ... if (self.team == 1) self.skin = 1;

Thanks R00k, for Qrack users like Peg and myself who play this mod that would be a useful alternative and I'll have a look at seeing if I can do that with my limited Quake knowledge, but I'm also thinking of the others like Polarite, Jackhammer and others (who may not have seen the Qrack light yet ) who might also like to try the skins. Maybe I should just give them the Qrack download link and be done with it hehe :d

Thanks for the info and taking the time to get back to me

          Kind regards

Well, if you give them a custom player model with the skins that u want included, then make sure the mod changes the .skin field to use the skins then they really dont need to use Qrack, unless you were wanting to use 24-bit skins support

Thank you everybody for your help, links and advice. Fortunately, after much searching I found what I was after and having tested it last night I'm happy to report that it does work with the new version of the Quake DeathmatchPlus Mod. Huraah! Although, in fairness, the mod was updated with some bug fixes and new features last night so I'll have to check it again.

In the spirit of helping my fellow Quake players, if you fancy trying it out for a little fun you should able to download the mskin12.zip from here, or if that becomes unavailable pm me and I can make it available to you*. To use it you should create a folder called multiskin within your quake directory, unpack the contents of the zip file into it and run your quake engine with a -game multiskin in your command line. Once running use impulse 200 to cycle through the skins. I've tested this on Qrack and proquake and it worked ok for me. Needless to say without a mirror or some other player also testing it with you it will be difficult to see what you look like. Qrack users like myself should ensure that cl_teamskin is set to 0 in order for this to work.

As the mod is circa 1999 you can imagine the 18 or so skins available sure could do with a little updating. If anyone with some graphical flare does do this then I'd be grateful if you would let me know. In the interim picture multiple versions of the Star Wars Stormtrooper, The terminator, Judge Dredd, the Predator and Captain Picard battling it out on my little test server

Have fun and I hope this helps

                Kind regards

                * Users of my awful crappy little website can find the required files in the Mod section if the link above is down as well as some sample screenshots of what some of the skins look like.

Np's CS and thanks for getting back to me. Blimey, 30 or so skins! Sounds impressive. maybe I missed it, but do you know if there is a .mdl file to accompany this or are the textures in a progs.dat like the multiskin mod?
I wonder if the issue of having "some problems with dead players and skins" they mentioned could relate to the players losing their skins when dead. Fortunately, version 1.2 of the multiskin mod is 'supposed' to over that, woot!

Now, if some talented 'Quake' artist would produce some up to date skins.... :d

                    Kind regards
