  • Performance problem

Thought I would try posting in here to hopefully get some different opinions, as my problem wasn't resolved in the help forum.

My problem is this: Despite having a good, new, fast computer, turning off Vsync and increasing the pq_maxfps to 999, I'm only getting about 50fps in GLPro at 640x480 res. I can't figure out why.

I got literally 10 times the performance on half the computer (my old computer)

It's been a year since I've Quaked so maybe I'm missing something really small, but I don't know what it is.

Anyways, my comp has a dual core processor, 2GB ram, Nvidia Geforce 6150. With this, I have no idea why Quake is performing so poorly. It also slows down even more in battles/busy areas. I was expecting close to 1000fps in this resolution, yet it's 20x worse. Can anybody tell me what might be going on here? I'd really appreciate it. It's not worth playing if I'm not on par with everyone else.

I might as well be back in the HPB days on my P133!

    You shouldn't put pq_maxfps to 999.

Set it to 250 or 350, tops.

Setting pq_maxfps to a very high number can have adverse effects including causing you to lag badly.

This *could* be your problem. The description seems to fit.

Hi again Baker, and thanks for the continued help. But no, I'm afraid that's not the solution I've tried many maxfps settings and all yield the same result.

Maybe I'm missing some kind of file for GLquake or something. Maybe there's something in the command line I'm forgetting... this is so bizarre... I now care more about figuring out why this is happening than actually playing Quake!

If you really want to get to the bottom of this, something that might shed some light on this is using the http://www.quakeone.com/proquake/ to generate diagnostics information and pasting it here.

After you start it up, click "More" and then click "Diagnostics" and then click "Copy" and then paste it here.

        Mine looks like this:

That's a whole ton of stuff you have running in the background.

62 processes is quite a few. And you have 700 MB of RAM being used by all that stuff too. I don't even have that much RAM

You might consider thinning that down a bit. Maybe uninstalling some of that which you don't use and shutting down things that don't need to be running 24/7.

make sure vsync is [off] in your video driver (not on application controlled)

Baker is right, I had someone bring their PC to me saying it couldn't run larger programs as good as it use to, the PC only had 512MB of ram and the processes were taking up 700MB+ which is a MAJOR performance hit.

Anyway, I went to (Windows XP PRO) -Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services- and turned off a bunch of the stuff that wasn't needed.

Its very important to also check your startup programs and turn off any that you do not need, this helps with over all system performance from the start.

To do this go to Start, Run..., type in "msconfig", in the window that pops up click on the "Startup" tab and you should get a list of check boxes and listings.. I would say its probably safe to uncheck 98% of everythingin that list as its only programs that startup after the system loads important files. You can also reverse the process an turn these startup programs back on, just re-check them.

Before you try anything else see if using less system resources helps!

Also check for improper / generic drivers for your chipset and video card

on my AMD 2800+ 1.5GB PC it runs Qrack just fine at 1280x1024 32BPP in window mode, I never am running more then 22 processes (I run Apache2, MySQL 5.0 & PHP5.0) & I would say 16 processes is ideal, I think the bare minimum for the amount of processes it takes to actually run Windows XP is around 12-13 and only takes 60MB of system ram.

Well, I think I've tried it all now. It doesn't seem to matter that whether I have 60 tasks or 30 tasks, it's exactly the same performance every time.

I've messed with the video card settings and that doesn't seem to improve anything either.

At this point, giving up sounds great. I will deal with my low frame rates. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Sorry you have these problems, I know it is no fun.

Try a couple other GL clients.
