  • Deathmatch Maps recompiled with free Textures

take GPLed and Free(maybGPLed) Textures from rygel and get a 100% free Q1 Dm Levels!
Yeah, i did the work, dunno if somebody else did before, but heres the final product:

That means: get darkplaces or any other engine, get some free models and the redone Maps and you get a 100 % free Quake 1 multiplayer

Cool but true. Well, Im still working on retexturing of the DM Levels, but my final dream is to recreate Q1 GPLed.

Sounds odd for the first moment, but lets think about what we already got:
-GPLed Q1 source and derivates: darkplaces, tenebrae ...
-GPLed Maps from john Romero. Info: textures are compiled in, textures are copyright by ID Software, so you got to replace it.
Good news: I did it-replaced the Tex with rygel ones, compiled the map and voila!
-Free Sounds: Almost all sounds are already redone by the openquartz project
-Free models: Needed ones for Dm and already found: darkplaces mod, openquartz, etc-torch, armor aso.

Throwing it all in the kitchensink and getting a fully working Quake 1!
Ok, only multiplayer, but what do we need for the SP-Episodes? Not much- a few Models: enforcer, shambler, knight .. thats all.

Im still working on retexturing and mailing with rygel and other "fat brothers" of the scene, but it looks good.

So if you want to contribute: drop me a line.
Or do yo know a good model?
    someone tried this alreaady before?
    Whatya think boutit?

    Tell me,
    DL

Heres aone of the retextured and free DMs for testing:

Nice!! Yes this is what we need. Thank you! If we can get a totally free GPL quake1 then I think we can get a lot more people playing. It could be included, perhaps, into a Linux distribution or whatever, too.

There are the boss models, too.

The problem is that rygel's textures are obviously 100% copies of id's artwork, which is copyrighted. Same with most custom weapon models, and player models, and the player skins.

I think it's not even legal to copy something and then put that copy under the GPL. It's questionable.

Imagine copying the Mona Lisa and proclaiming "Technically, I painted it" and releasing your copy under the GPL... that's kind of an ass-backwards GPL infringement. It's not your artwork, you don't own the copyright, so you can't release it under a different license than the original.

Others have tried to do this; the only way to get Quake 100% free is to use your own, original (!!!) artwork (models/textures) but in that case, it wouldn't be Quake anymore. See Open Quartz.

Recreating Quake with models, skins and textures, and HUD items, and fonts, that are 100% copied from the original, is copyright infringement. Sorry.

          At least admit it.

You could question the originality of generic brick/stone/metal textures, of course. But you can NOT question the originality (->copyright) of an Enforcer skin, a shaft model, or the idbase texture set, or even the "runes" or the jesus picture from your DM2 screenshot.

          It's plain to see.

By the way, what's so difficult about "buy or warez the full version"?

What's up with today's youth? Too lazy to download something from (Steam|$TORRENT)?

Correct me if I'm wrong but Baker started SYNQ to make freequake legal. And I think he explained that in order for it to be legal, it had to look and sound nothing like quake. That's why everyone looks like it's on acid.
