  • Ping - couldn't find a fix

I looked through a few threads about ping, but I haven't been able to find anything that's worked for me. I'm using ProQuake, and even in the server list i'm seeing pings of 250+ and half of those are 9999. Before the server browser sorts through them all the pings on some are 80 - 90.

I'm using DSL, and I seem to be lagging more than I ever did on my old 166 with dial-up.

    AMD 3800 Athlon 64
    xp media center
    1gb ram
    cl_maxfps 72
    pq_drawfps 1 - settings from other thread
256mb on board nvidia 6150 LE

    any ideas?

Where are you located? If you are in the Western United States (like California?) or Western Canada, it is at least possible that this could be true.

Seems unlikely, but I know of a player or 2 with bad ping on most of the servers.

/Note: a ping of 9999 means the server doesn't exist or the address changed. You might need to, for example, press INS and add speaknow.quakeone.com.

You should have like 20 ping @ rage.quakeone.com or bomber.quakeone.com

Unless you are sharing your bandwidth with friends or have a download running in the background like a Windows Update or something.

Or if your ISP is really crappy.

what fps do you get? the command in proquake to cap fps is pq_maxfps (not cl_maxfps).

if you are actually getting more then 1000 fps this might very well be the reason your lagging..

Well, I feel like a dumbass. Been downloading a torrent for close to 2 days now (crappy # of seeders with crappy speed), and my upload was maxed. Not sure why it didn't cross my mind... Came up with 100 on bomber, and rage was around 130. Certainly good enough to play, but no action going on so I'll have to see what things are like with an active server. Did find about 5 servers with a 70 - 85 ping.

Thanks for the tip about the pq_maxfps. Is there a built in command to view your fps with proquake? I remember having to download a little pak/mod before that displayed it on the screen.

speaknow.quakeone.com (Clan arena server) and shmack.quake.net (runequake server) are the most popular servers at this point in time. Both are located in the midwest, Chicago and St. Louis (I believe), respecitvely.
