  • Coping with Lag

Alright. I've installed EzQuake and managed to connect to server in Europe. I pinged about 400. I was able to play and get a few kills but mostly by luck. I was at the bottom of the scoreboard. Well anyway the games stopped sliding and its better than the 600-700 ping i used to get in Netquake. Before I played Quake I upgraded my internet connection to 1.5 mbps and that did not help my ping.

    1. What are some commands I can use to reduce ping?
    2. Whats a proxy and how can I use it to reduce lag?
    3. What can I do about the 3 million sound files servers force me to download?

Hmmm. How do you have 600 ping?

Are you using cable, DSL, dialup or satellite?

/If satellite, high ping is normal for it. If not using satellite, there is no way you should have 600 ping.

Blimey, I used to get better than that playing transatlantic at Junker via dialup. Assuming your system is clean I would start with the obvious things such as...
      • Turning of as many unnecessary apps as possible that could be eating in to you bandwidth such as some torrent or peer to peer software.
      • Make sure your quake time doesn't coincide with any windows or antivirus updates.
      • Try different clients such as proquake, qrack or dark places.
      • Check to see if anyone else on the server is having the same problem as it could be server based rather than your client (Peg using polarite's server to download his porn again (jk) ).
      • Try different servers to see if the problem is more widespread for you- if you're based in northern europe there are several to choose from
      • Check to see if there are any other machines on your network using your connection (Wifi leeching is rife for the unwary)

On the subject of proxying you might ask players like Peg or Polarite as I believe they may have explored this a lot further than I.

Sounds files? I've never been forced to downlaod any soundfiles from any server in europe. I could be wrong but I believe that some of the Clan Arena mods use a few non standard sounds along the lines of "3 - 2 - 1 - fight" or something like that but you could probably play without them.

It would probably help some of the Quake gurus (cough, Baker, cough) here to help you if you gave them a little more information to go on, e.g. your means of connection, system spec, etc

      Hope this helps

Maybe in netquake u played with ur maxfps way to high.. that can cause serious lag.

In netquake if u have like a very crappy connection u can always play around with faqproxy , so u can manual adjust ur upload and download speed(rate).

For QW u can reduce lag by testing diffrend rate settings.

No I forgot to mention that I'm playing from Thailand. Some people have suggested that I playing in Australia. Australia seems to have the same ping as Eastern Europe does. I'll give Australia another try.

Here are my specs: I am using an intel Celeron. My CPU is about 2.66 and I have 1GB of ram. My graphic card is a ASUS A9550 with about 250 mb of ram. My comp can run darkplaces, Qrack, Joequake, Proquake and EzQuake fine. It can run most games fine with anti aliasing and lighting effects off. I have 1.5mb DSL connection. I'm using a router. Anything else?

Well your rig seems powerful enough to run Quake in it's various guises. If you have already gone through the earlier suggestions then try and find a server closer to you. Maybe try quake.shmack.net in the states or [as you mentioned] one of the servers in Australia. The guys at besmella-quake might be able to point you in the right direction for an Aussie server

              Hope this helps
