  • Difficulties joining a server.

I tried playing multiplayer quake for the first time in years today. I've got GLQuake 0.97 [it says 1.09 next to that], when I tell it to connect to a server it'll go

    Trying...
    Connection accepted

And then nothing. I can't get rid of the console and it won't proceed from there. Do I need a new version?

GLQuake is not NAT fixed, it has problems connecting through a router:

      List of NAT fixed clients:

      1. ProQuake
      2. Qrack
      3. DarkPlaces
      4. JoeQuake

GL ProQuake is an authentic looking GLQuake.

Qrack is a much fancier looking Quake, DarkPlaces is geared towards lighting effects + cutting edge features.

All I needed to do was type "status" into the console after I got the "connection accepted" response.

Yeah, but that's like wiggling the power cord.

I don't know why, but I'm not going to ask you to explain it. I will read it if you do, though

Perhaps a better way to explain how I think of it:

If you bought a car and you had to get out and hit the motor with a hammer for it to start, you would consider it defective right?

I consider WinQuake and GLQuake defective for the same reason.

There are countless bug fixes and improvements in ProQuake, Qrack, JoeQuake and DarkPlaces aside from that one.

For instance, every one of those clients display ping in the scoreboard and has improved aim for instance, and a more accurate crosshair. Just some examples. If you connect to, for instance, speaknow.quakeone.com and hang around, it shows what players are using and you'll see that just about every player is using some version of ProQuake or Qrack.
