If you are in Australia as I suspect, there aren't any servers that anyone here plays at that you would get even a remotely decent ping.

There are probably a few Australian Quakeworld players left, you might try:

    http://www.besmella-quake.com

    Or:

    http://www.quakeworld.nu

    Or:

    http://www.quakeservers.net
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

This could possibly be a comms problem and has been experienced previously by players (inlcuding yours truly) using a router. I could be wrong but I think Baker has put a fix for this in his GLProquake client available from this site. I seem to remember reading something about R00k putting it in his Qrack client, which is also available from this site, recently to help solve the problem. Try downloading, installing and running it and let us know if you still get the problem.

        Kind regards

        Monty
P.S You might try adding :26000 to the server address you're typing in just to be on the safe side

your name should be saved in config.cfg and quake should load that on startup..

if for some reason this does not happen you can always manually load it by typing:

            exec config.cfg

            in console..

or.. if you made some funky name using some namemaker and it has saved it to some file (say myname.cfg) type:

            exec myname.cfg

            in console..

or just add this line to whatever custom .cfg file you use:

            name "whateveryournameis"

these .cfg files should be in ~\id1 folder but if you use "-game mygame" commandline option they should be in ~\mygame folder..

Sound advice as always from Peg ( )o( )

You might also consider checking your config.cfg file to ensure that it isn't set to read only. A common oversight is to copy Quake from a CD backup only to find that the config file is set this way and you can't permanently save any changes you make to your quake config. Once you reset it using Windows explorer it tends to resolve that problem.

One word of caution, it is sometimes a good idea to make the file read only once you have it the way you want it as certain changes can be made which you may not want when you connect to some servers (FVF was an example that sprung to mind).

              Hope this helps

                  Re-install won't help.

Let's call the computer you want to connect to the "server". And the one you are typing "connect xxx" the "client".

On the server, what is the IP address? Type ipconfig in the console to see. You will get a number like 192.168.1.101 or something.

On the client, type "connect 192.168.1.101". If it fails then do the following ...

Click start and then run and type "cmd" in the box. You will have the black DOS screen and then type "ipconfig". One of the ip addresses shown should have something like 192.168.1.xxx.

/I'm assuming you have a router.

On the basis that you seem to trying to connect to a machine on your LAN you might consider looking at the firewall on your quake server machine and allowing the Quake executable you are using (wqpro99?) to allow traffic through the firewall. E.g. when using Windows Xp firewall it goes something like Start > control panel > Exceptions > Add program > path to your quake executable > scope of your local network > Ok. it sounds as though you are not getting packets routed through from the server <---> client.

                        Hope this helps

It's hard to tell how to help, so here's a bunch of questions:

When you make a server on one computer, what quake client do you use? Currently, I assume you just tell quake to make a new game from the menu "Multiplayer", so tell me if that's wrong.

On the other computer, how are you telling it to connect to the server computer? Did you find the IP address? Do you tell quake to look for servers?(Baker was describing how to find the IP of the server when you're on the server computer.)

I doubt it, but it is possible that you are running one quake executable and one quakeworld executable, so tell us the file names of the two quake programs you are using.

Which firewall program are you using? Do you know how to tell if a program is allowed or blocked?

                          Comment
