  • setting up a coop server for two players with a home computer

Me and my buddy are trying to play some quake 1 cooperative action... but we are having some problems.

First of all, I'm trying to use winproquake to host the game, and enhanched glquake for playing. We are going to use my buddy's home pc to host the game: since it is only two players and cooperative, it is going to be able to take the load, isn't it?

Second: I tried connecting to other servers with enhanched gl quake and it works. So, no problem with this.

So... how do I setup an internet server for cooperative play? I tried the standard multiplayer\newgame, I tried setting up winproquake with -dedicated (it doesn't work), i tried setting it up with –dedicated 2 –noipx –condebug –heapsize 32768 –
zone 1024 –ip ipnumber –udpport 26000 and it still doesn't work.

    notes
-I already checked the firewall settings. And again, I tried connecting to another server, a public hosted one, and it works, so at least we know we can actively connect to servers using quake. the problem is the hosting
    Any help?

tl;dr I need to setup an internet server for a cooperative game for two using a home computer. Help?

First make sure the ip the other person trying to connect to is correct, check at http://whatismyip.com/ to see your internet ip. If the ip you think you are using is 192.168.x.x that's an internal router ip for your LAN and not an actual internet ip (I don't know if this is your problem but I can't be sure of what you do or don't know.)

That being said, trying to host a NetQuake server on a home computer to play with someone else, unless you are BOTH using DarkPlaces is a recipe for pain and misery.

First, as much as I like Enhanced GLQuake, it is not NAT fixed and things can be compounded with a "DSL annoyance" that also affects that engine. If you are getting "connection accepted" and nothing happens trying typing "status" in the console of the client and see that forces it. Anyway, I would not recommend using Enhanced GLQuake or FitzQuake or regular GLQuake over the internet. At least not for a first attempt setup.

    Two best options:

    1. Assuming you want to do this quickly and with as little pain as possible, I would recommend using Mirc and asking at the DarkPlaces IRC for assistance and you both must be using DarkPlaces.

I think with DarkPlaces you can do sv_public 1 in the console after you start a listen server and then the other person should be able to see your server in the list of DarkPlaces servers in the server browser.

    2. You could also try using a Quakeworld client to host and connect to the game. If you plan on running a Quake mod and not standard vanilla Quake, this is unworkable.

No matter what you do, your router (if you have one) and firewall are the biggest pitfalls. Since you can connect to servers, I would imagine you are fine on the firewall.

I hope this helps. In the days before routers and firewalls were used, this was no problem at all to do. Things are clearly different now.

      thanks

Well I'm going to try what you suggested, but I wanted to thank you for your time and patience first.

I'm going to try darkplaces and see if it works. I hope it works with the hipnotic mission pack.

      Thanks again

Best and easiest way to do this is to connect the two of them with a crossover cable. Adding the internet into the equation will only complicate things.
