  • Interleaving ?

I was wondering if anyone knew much about interleaving and any effects it may have on connecting to NetQuake servers.

I've been having a gander at the techy bits.
By default, the wonderful institution of British Telecom, turns on interleaving nowadays. Briefly, basically better packet control it seems.
MAXdsl lines take advantage of this apparently but with other ISP's I'm not sure it's on by default.
Soooo.. I was on a QuakeWorld server, (don't hit me) and it was suggested turning OFF interleaving would reduce ping by 20-30 !
As a result I asked BT to hit the big red button and, Huzzah ! less then 48 hrs later my ping was slashed from 50-60 down to 25 !

Quote from one of many pages -http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/interleaving.htm

'BT state that interleaving can increase latency by an additional 20-40ms. Whilst this will not be noticeable to the vast majority of users, ardent gamers are the ones most likely to complain about additional latency and therefore prefer a slower sync speed than higher latency.'

That's quite a drop. I thought I'd try the NQ servers too.. but can't connect.
To ANY of the Euro servers. I've tried 4 or 5 clients now. Bugger all.
Before I talk to the lovely man at BT, does anyone know if this is a direct connection to BT ? It surely seems so. And anyone aware if it can be resolved ?
Again, apologies if this has already been discussed but it also maybe of use to others.

    Any thoughts would be nice.

    No idea.

What error message do you get when you fail to connect? In ProQuake or Qrack, what happens when you type "test2 bigfoot.quake1.net"?

What does DarkPlaces do if you try to connect to, say, bigfoot.quake1.net? Can you connect to DarkPlaces servers via the DarkPlaces server browser when using DarkPlaces, but not connect to NQ servers using DarkPlaces?

I use DarkPlaces as an example because it has the best networking code of any Quake client and there could be something special going on. You said Quakeworld works so it NQ isn't working and if this isn't somehow user error, DarkPlaces may be "proofed" against whatever type of problem you are having. Would be particularly interesting if DarkPlaces can connect to DarkPlaces or Quakeworld servers but not NetQuake servers.

      Cheers for the reply.
Embarrassingly, it seems to work fine now.
Some good thoughts about DP though.
I rebooted the machine/hub a few times but not a sausage. But after a day or so it seems fine now. No idea. It saves me a call to tech support though.

But apart from that, I'd really recommend others look into it. To halve my ping in QW and maybe -20 in NQ, it's worth a go. All other net activities seem fine at the moment. (albeit only a few days in)
