This is probably an EXTREMELY noobish question, but how do i play Quake online on windows xp (using darkplaces engine)?

To get in and quickly play simply type
"connect quake.shmack.net" into the Quake console (Don't include the quotes)
This will send you to the RuneQuake server which is a decent place to learn all the mechanics of online play.
Once you feel secure in your online skills I would recommend trying out some of the other less newbie friendly servers, you can find a huge server list here.
