    Welcome!

What "client" did you install? QUAKE.exe GLQUAKE.exe ProQuake?
Which server did you connect to? Did you see the map or just stuck at the console? Best bet is to try a list of servers till you get something. Then keep posting here on your progress.

As quake.runequake.com is a popular server among newbies, i dont suggest it as a newbie server. As there are more things going in that mod at one time, to the new guy (and even me), theres alot to be confused by. I'd suggest something simple like ClanArena, just dont shoot your teammates!

Jordan, make sure you delete the file named "opengl32.dll" inside your quake folder.

I'm running the shareware equivalent of Quake using WinQuake Pro 3.99. I can connect to the servers without a lot of difficulty but every one I connect to it says I dont have the map, even though I have that particular .bsp in my map directory. Consequently I can read what's going on but not see anything. While I realize having the full registered version might alleviate this problem, I thought I read somewhere that for network games one didnt need the full version to play? Was I misinfomed?

Can I play other versions like CTF and TeamFortress without having the registered version as well?

Thanks for any help in advance.

                  map dir is quake/id1/maps

also models are an issue with something like this for there is quite a few in the second, and sounds, but sounds don't stop the game
